The Indian passenger vehicles segment reported a decline in sales for the second month in August 2024, amid reports of rising inventory at dealerships. Car makers have reportedly started to reduce dispatches to dealerships to control inventory levels.

The total domestic PV sales slipped to 3,41,028 vehicles in August 2024, down from 3,44,955 vehicles in August 2023, registering a 1% year-on-year decline.

Top automakers take a hit

Maruti Suzuki, the country’s biggest automaker took a hit in August 2024, with 1.43,075 cars sold, down from 1,56,114 sold in August 2023, recording an 8% year-on-year decline in sales.


The company’s compact segment which includes cars such as Swift and Baleno recorded a 20% decline in sales. The SUV segment continued to grow, registering a 7% increase in sales.

Hyundai takes the second position with 49,525 cars sold during August 2024, down from 53,830 cars sold in August 2023, recording an 8% year-on-year decline in sales.

Tata Motors sold 44,142 vehicles in August 2024, down from 45,513 vehicles sold in August 2023, recording a 3% decline in sales.

Mahindra and Mahindra emerges as a close fourth

Mahindra and Mahindra have received a boost in sales in August 2024, with 43,277 cars sold, up from 37,270 cars sold in August 2023, recording a 16% year-on-year growth. The company’s sales were boosted by its recently launched XUV 3XO.

Toyota takes the fifth spot with 28,589 cars sold in August 2024, up from 20,944 cars sold in August 2023, recording a 37% growth.

Kia India is next with 22,523 cars sold in August 2024, up from 19,219 cars sold in August 2023, recording a 17% increase in sales.

MG Motor recorded a 9% growth in sales, with 4,571 cars sold in August 2024, up from 4,185 cars sold in August 2023.

Honda recorded the biggest decline, with 5,326 cars sold in August 2024, down from 7,880 cars sold in August 2023, registering a 32% year-on-year decline in sales.
