In a bold and ambitious move BSNL is looking forward to setting up 40,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the country, a move that calls for Rs. 6,000 Crores worth investment.
The tender for the said project is likely to be announced this July.
"BSNL will set up 40,000 Wi-Fi hot spots across the country and the project is likely to be completed by 2018," Telecom Minister
BSNL will set up around 2,500 Wi-Fi hotspots at 250 places this year that need investments to the tune of Rs. 500 Crores. BSNL CMD Anupam Shrivastava claimed 200 such hotspots have already been established.
BSNL will provide free Wi-Fi services for 30 minutes every 24 hrs three times a month. Visitors can use this service in several sessions.
After the free usage limit is reached, one has to pay for the service.
BSNL plans to expand the purview of its Wi-Fi service to several other tourist and religious hot spots like Khajuraho and Jagannath among others by March next year.
