British astronaut Tim Peake, who arrived on the International Space Station on just over 10 days ago, still appears to be working out how to use the phone systems from space.

He apparently dialled the wrong number and said, "Hello, is this planet Earth?" to a woman on the receiving line who did not know him.

He later tweeted an apology and insists it was not a prank call. It's not clear who Peake was trying to reach.

Peake is the first Brit to be selected by the European Space Agency to become an astronaut, and will be the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station for a scientific expedition.

The 43-year-old blasted off from Kazakhstan on December 15 with fellow astronauts Tim Kopra from the United States and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko on a six-month mission.

Peake hasn't been long off this planet but is already tweeting some stunning pictures from the orbiting outpost, like the one below.
