In a bid to ease domestic travel in India, the ministry has decided to allow foreigners and NRIs to book train tickets online. This could be done using their credit or debit cards issued by respective foreign banks. As of now, this is done only via booking agents, tour operators or relatives and friends.

IRCTC is undergoing several changes in its system to enable international transactions.

“Our aim is to facilitate foreigners and NRIs hassle-free ticket booking facility and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been instructed to do the needful,” a senior Railway Ministry official said.

Generally, foreigners like to book train tickets for Buddhist circuit trains, luxury services like 'Palace on Wheel', 'Maharaja' and other such tourist specials. The process will likely be functional by the end of this month.
