Modi is desperate and it shows in the way he’s seeking Congress’ support on the GST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi government is making all attempts to pass the crucial Goods and Services Tax bill in the second part of the Monsoon Session.

The government is leaving no stone unturned to coax the Congress party-led Opposition, terming the bill in national interest.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu reached out to all parties and took their views on important bills. Despite all the attempt, some parties, especially the Congress, have refused to cooperate and created roadblocks in passage of bills which is affecting the growth of the economy, he said.

"I once again appeal to all political parties to please think in national interest... This is very important in the backdrop of the current financial situation across the globe," Naidu said.

The government is worried that further delay in the passage of the GST bill will force further delay and failure to meet the April 1, 2016, deadline for the implementation of GST.

Naidu also met the Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and spoke to Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, over the phone to seek support on The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Second) Amendment Bill.

However, Congress showed no signs of support.

Failing in all attempts, Naidu blamed the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi for the deadlock and accused them of harming the economy.

BJP ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Rajiv Pratap Rudy have also visited Sonia Gandhi. The second part of the Monsoon Session in likely to be held in the second week of September.
