At least nine people - many of them high schoolers - are dead after a tractor-trailer collided with a tour bus of college hopefuls heading towards Humboldt State in Northern California last night, California police said. More than 30 people were injured.

The students were going to take a tour of the campus.

Reuters reports a FedEx truck "lost control, crossed a divider on Interstate 5, side-swiped a car and then smashed head-on into the tour bus around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday," according to California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Tracy Hoover.

Around 50 people were onboard the bus. 5 students, 2 chaperones, and the drivers of both vehicles were killed.

The crash took place near the community of Orland, 95 miles north of Sacramento. The students were traveling from the Los Angeles area.

The surviving student and chaperones are "traumatized, absolutely. Most of them have scratches, cuts, burns, contusions and lacerations - a magnitude of injuries," Hoover said.

We will continue to have updates on this story as more information becomes available.
