At least 12 people were killed after a car bomb exploded outside a Baghdad mall followed by four gunmen storming the shopping center, Agence France-Presse reported.

Iraqi security and medical sources confirmed the siege on the mall has ended with the gunmen being killed and the hostages freed, per AFP.

"The security forces are now fully in control," a senior police officer said.

AFP is also reporting the Islamic State has taken credit for the attack, which was staged by as many as 20 militants, according to the BBC

At least 27 additional people have been reported injured, per the BBC.

The Wall Street Journal's Middle East correspondent Matt Bradley made note that complex, multifaceted attacks like Monday's are rare in Baghdad.
