The Delhi government has said it will make public transport free for women in the national capital, citing safety reasons.
Women in the national capital can travel free in state-run DTC buses as well as the Delhi Metro, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Monday.
The new rules are expected to go into effect in the next two to three months.
The concerned departments have reportedly been asked to submit a report on ridership within a week, he told the media.
"On all DTC buses, cluster buses and metro trains women will be allowed to travel free of cost so that they have a safe travel experience and can access modes of transport which they were not able to, due to high prices. Public transport has been considered the safest mode of travel,” Kejriwal said at a press conference.
However, he urged all the women — who are able to afford the tickets — to make a voluntary contribution by purchasing one.
