The US Department of Justice subpoenaed Nvidia as part of a brewing probe into whether the tech and AI chip giant violated antitrust laws, Bloomberg reported.

The move marks an escalation in the DOJ's investigation. The government had previously sent out questionnaires to several businesses, Bloomberg reported. But the subpoenas delivered to Nvidia Corp. and other technology companies are a new legal step.

A spokesperson for Nvidia declined to comment.

Business Insider reached out to the US Attorney's Office in San Francisco for comment.

Antitrust officials are investigating whether Nvidia's dominance has made it difficult for buyers to use other suppliers, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the situation.
