Apple starts its developer conference right off with a dig at Windows 8

Jun 8, 2015, 23:09 IST

Apple's developers conference has kicked off this morning at San Francisco. A few minutes into the big keynote, the company started talking about its new version of OS X, OS X El Capitan.

But first, Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, gave an update on the adoption of Apple's OS X, Yosemite, saying "OS X Yosemite had the fastest adoption rate of any PC operating system in history."

Naturally, Apple slipped in a dig at its old adversary Microsoft in the graphic, showing Windows 8 adoption at 7%.

That's not entirely accurate, at least according to the watcher of such things, Net Marketshare. It shows Windows 8 at a mere 3.5%, but it shows Windows 8.1, the updated version, at nearly 13%. Either way, that's a far cry from Yosemite's 55%.

Remember, in sheer numbers though, Windows is still a much bigger market, although Apple has been gaining. Apple shipped nearly 1.7 million PCs in the first quarter of 2015, up 9% from over the first quarter of 2014. But that's out of almost nearly 72 million units shipped worldwide, or nearly 14 million shipped in the US, most of them using Windows, according to Gartner.
