Apple Music is really trying to replace what radio used to do - here's why

Most online music services rely on computer programs to recommend songs and build playlists. But Apple is placing a big bet on human editors with a strong knowledge and love of music. The idea is that these human editors, like the radio DJs of yesteryear, will help turn Apple Music into a great way to discover new music.

Apple's timing might be perfect: In just the last five years, according to research from Edison Research provided by Statista, the internet has raced ahead of radio to become the number one way users discover music.

If Apple can capture the hearts and ears of music fans hungry for new tunes, it could turn Apple Music into a smash hit - and change how the recording industry works yet again.
