Retina iMac 5K

It looks like Apple is planning to launch a brand new iMac with a gorgeous 4K retina screen.

Code hidden within the beta for El Capitan, Apple's next major software upgrade for Mac computers, hints that a new 4K iMac with a 21.5-inch screen is in the works, French website Consomac has discovered.

This isn't the first time we've heard about this new 21.5-inch iMac - 9to5Mac's Mark Gurman and journalist Pierre Dandumont made a similar discovery at the end of June. Back then, the two found support for a 4,096 x 2,304 resolution display made by Apple in the code for an older beta of El Capitan.

Now, however, Consomac has found that a newer version of the beta supports the same dimensions and even includes a picture of the new iMac. There are also images of a new 5K iMac, suggesting that Apple may update its current 27-inch 5K iMac in the near future.

Apple currently sells a 21.5-inch iMac with a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen that starts at $1,099.99. A new version with a sharper screen will likely be more expensive than that.

This discovery comes as KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accuracy when it comes to predicting future Apple products, issued a note to clients saying new iMac models are coming, as Apple Insider reported. Kuo didn't provide many details on what on what these new iMacs would entail, but did say in the note that they would feature faster processors and display quality that's "much better" than the current models.

Apple sometimes unveils new Mac products in October, so there's a chance we'll learn more about upcoming iMacs later this year.

Apple has not responded to Business Insider's request for comment.
