PSA Airlines, a regional carrier owned by American Airlines, canceled 675 flights between Thursday and Friday due to a technical issue, American Airlines confirmed to Business Insider. PSA plans to resume operations on Friday at 12 p.m. ET.

"Our team members are focused on taking care of our customers by accommodating them on mainline flights or other regional carriers," American said. "We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans, and we are sorry for the trouble this caused. Customer relations will be reaching out to all of those who have been impacted by this issue."

A majority of the canceled flights were headed to or from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, an American Airlines representative said.

On Thursday evening, Twitter users expressed their frustration with how American handled the cancellations. Some users said American did not provide accommodations for food or lodging.

"So when your #customerservice reps told me it had nothing to do with American & was an issue related to air traffic control (& therefore ZERO comp for travel/hotel), they were just 100% lying to me. Nice. That's really super. @Delta / @JetBlue - y'all have some $ coming your way," one user said in response to American's message about the cancellations.

"@AmericanAir . I've been sitting in the Charlotte airport for hours. Cancelled. Can't get on another flight, waited long enough that I can't get on a different airline. No hotel. No rental car. Won't get my luggage. I'll just curl up next to this trachcan," another user said.

A third Twitter user posted a video of travelers at Charlotte-Douglas. "American Airlines Cancellation at #CLT everything cancelled. No cars, no flights, no help. #thanksamericanairlines @AmericanAir," he said.

An American Airlines representative told Business Insider that travelers were not told that the cancellations were caused by air traffic control, and said the airline provided hotel accommodations for affected customers.
