Android Go now has a dedicated Yahoo Mail app
Tech2 min read

  • Yahoo now has an Android mail app which just 10 MB in size.
  • The new app delivers all the existing features of the mobile app in a small size.
  • The company has also launched a changed UI for all its web users.
After announcing the shutdown of Yahoo messenger, Oath, the Verizon subsidiary, has some good news for its Android users.

The company, in order to deliver first-class Yahoo Mail service experience to every Android device regardless of the devices location, storage or network speeds, has unveiled two new major initiatives. A completely new and modern Yahoo mail web experience and a new app which is optimised for Android Go phones.

Yahoo Mail Go for Android Go

The company, through this new initiative, is claiming to provide the same Yahoo Mail speeds and reliability but with lower data usage.

The new Yahoo Mail Go app packs all the features we see on the current Android app but it takes up smaller space, of about 10 MB, and the RAM usage of the app is below 50 MB.

The company said that the original Yahoo Mail app was already extremely lightweight, so they did not have to remove major features to reduce the Yahoo Mail app size for Go. And they have not compromised on performance either. According to the company, the Go app uses the exact same architecture as the standard Yahoo Mail app.

All phones with Android Oreo (Go edition) as an operating system can now download the new Yahoo Mail Go app from here.

The new and improved mobile web experience

The company in order to deliver a high-quality Yahoo Mail experience all across the globe has also developed a user interface (UI) which is not just modern, but also fast and lightweight. The new UI significantly improves the performance of the current features and also includes some new ones. These features are:

  • Swipe through inbox: This feature provides the user with quick accessibility to mark an email as read by swiping right or deleting it by swiping left.
  • Customisable look and feel: New colour themes with light and dark backgrounds that allow users to personalise their inbox.
  • Folders for easy mail organisation: The UI comes with a sidebar menu with folders for easy mail organisation and categorisation.
  • Email address suggestions: The company has also added an auto-suggest feature that gives the user the suggestions for most frequently used email addresses when the user types in the first few letters, so sending an email is faster than ever.
  • Infinite scrolling inbox: Users can now scroll all the way down the inbox without having to hit the “next” button to see more emails.
  • Quick action for emails: Easy delete, forward, reply and many more easy access features are available on the toolbar once the user opens a message.
The new UI also features an updated design, modern fonts and smoother transitions.

In addition to all the dramatic features and design updates, the changes in the Yahoo Mail mobile browser interface are also noticeable. In the enhanced version of the web app, there is no need for reloads – all actions like deleting, marking as read, and marking as spam, emptying trash are instant. The enhanced version also has a fully interactive app-like experience.
