Andrew Cuomo's Approval Rating Has Tanked After His Controversial Gun Control Law
Cuomo's approval rating remains on solid ground, but he has lost a bevy of support across the political aisle in the past month. His approval rating sits at 59 percent, down 15 points from last month. His disapproval rating is up to 28 percent, also up 15 points from last month.
The 30-point swing in a month is almost a direct result of the tough gun-control measure, which 34 percent of those surveyed think goes "too far." Earlier this month, New York passed measures championed by Cuomo as the nation's toughest on guns.
Cuomo lost the most support among Republicans. Their approval is down from an astounding 68-18 split in December to only a 44-43 split in January.
"Is Gov. Cuomo's honeymoon with Republicans over, or is this just a spat that can be patched up in the months ahead?" Quinnipiac poll director Maurice Carroll said in a statement. "Cuomo lost some Republican support after the 2011 same-sex marriage bill, but he got it back."
Among Democrats, Cuomo's support also fell from an 82-9 split in December to a 74-14 split in January. And Independent support dropped from a 70-12 split to a 54-32 split.
But though Cuomo spent much political capital in the gun control debate, Carroll still calls his approval ratings the "envy of most governors."
