APOklahoma Tea PartyNew research from Gallup has identified the 10 most conservative states in the U.S.

The research was carried out throughout 2012 and found that despite the fact that Americans have become somewhat more liberal, several states remain conservative bulwarks.

As the GOP seeks to reinvent itself, these states still remain the core constituencies of the party. In some of them, nearly half of all respondents identified themselves as conservatives.

To understand the impact of that, those figures don't even include those who merely identify as Republicans. These are states where nearly half of people identify themselves as staunch conservatives.

Ten states stand out for their high proportion of conservatives.
