And another Chinese phonemaker gets on Modi’s ‘Make in India’ bandwagon

Soon after the Narendra Modi govt celebrated a year in the parliament of India, political watchers have started analysing the Prime Minister’s credits and failures. And one place where the maximum cheering has been given is Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.And Modi’s shout for it has been echoing globally for quite some time now. Oppo, the phone manufacturer from China has plans to setup its own-brand handsets manufacturing unit in India by August focusing on the domestic market.
In a press statement issued by the company, Sky Li, Vice President, OPPO said, “India is the top priority in our expansion plans in South Asia this year. We have received tremendous support and appreciation from the customers and it is now time to reciprocate the feeling.”
“The Smartphone boom in India indicates the time is just right to focus on expansion plans and increasing volume in India to a comparable level with the China market in the next five years,” he added.
With more than 11% market share, Oppo is amongst the top three in Indonesia. At the same time, with 13% market lead in Vietnam and 11% in Malaysia, the Chinese phone maker wants to sell more than 15 million units in the current year.

Just like other Chinese players in Indian phone market, Oppo is competing in a tough market. As per the company released press statement, Oppo has sold 400,000 devices in India and are targeting for 1.5 million units this year.
