An Indian electricity tribunal has a bizarre job requirement—you must not have been married twice
- A draft notification issued by the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity in India reportedly disqualifies people from job applications in case they have been married twice, are in their second marriage or have been married to a person who has a ‘spouse living’.
- This was apparently the only disqualifying condition on the notification, which has since been taken down.
- Similar conditions have surfaced before in earlier notifications as well.
In the recently proposed notification, the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity listed conditions for interested candidates in services for over a dozen positions at the agency — ranging from lower division clerks to ranks equivalent to group A, B and C posts with the central government.
The eligibility criterion specified that any person applying for those positions should not have been married twice or married to a person who has a ‘spouse living’ — that is a spouse that’s been married before.
According to the report, that was the only disqualifying condition put up by the tribunal in its service rules for not reviewing a job application. However, an exception could be made if the second marriage was found ‘permissible’.
The draft notification as reported by ET stated:
“No person who has entered into or contracted a marriage with a person having a spouse living or who having a spouse living, has entered into or contracted a marriage with any person, shall be eligible for appointment to the said post.”
The draft has since been taken down following media inquiries. However, similar notifications have appeared over the past few years that are still up on the Ministry of Power’s website.
