Tom Brady sets another record.

  • A Tom Brady collectible card from the year 2000 has set a modern card record in an online auction.
  • The rare card sold for $400,100 because it was the "finest football card" in the 20-year history of the auctioneer who helped sell it.
  • The sale eclipsed the previous modern card record of $350,100 which was set just four days prior when a 1997 Michael Jordan card sold on eBay.

An autographed Tom Brady rookie card sold for a record amount in an online auction on Monday.

ESPN reports that the Brady card was part of the 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket collection, the same year Brady was drafted by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

The rare card, one of only 100 made and one of only two which received a grade of nine or higher by the Beckett Grading Services, fetched $400,100 - smashing a previous modern card record set four days earlier when a 1997 Michael Jordan card generated $350,100.

The auction was coordinated by eBay and PWCC Marketplace and the selling price was confirmed on Tuesday.

"This sale was record-setting but also largely predicted," PWCC Marketplace CEO Brett Huigens said, according to ESPN. "The trading card market is rapidly maturing among tangible asset investors and record prices are becoming increasingly frequent, especially among the market's most desired issues."

The Brady card was reportedly of the "highest quality." Huigens said: "This auction event featured the finest football card we've brokered in our 20-year history and achieved the highest-ever hammer price for a football card. We were honored to present this asset to the public and are delighted for the new owner."

Brady beat Jordan with the new sale

Brady, hailed by NBA superstar LeBron James as the greatest of all time after winning a sixth Super Bowl earlier in the year, beat the previous record card sale that had been set by Chicago Bulls guard and six-time NBA champion Jordan.

Huigens dubbed the Jordan card, which Marketwatch reports is only one of three known, a "holy grail" card at the time.

"We call it a 'holy grail' because it's so scarce and so desired that you just frankly never see it," Huigens said.

In general, rare and mint condition basketball cards tend to sell around the $100,000 mark.
