An active shooter was at North Lake College in the Dallas suburb of Irving, local police said on their Twitter feed on Wednesday, and the school was placed on lockdown.

"North Lake College-Intruder Lock-down. Go to nearest room and lock-down. POLICE ON SCENE," the school said on its Twitter feed.

Local TV news footage showed students in groups running for safety and numerous police vehicles on the campus.

A police spokesman in Irving, James McLellan, told reporters he believed shots had been reported, according to The Washington Post. He added that there may be injuries but the extent is unclear.

"We are dealing with an active shooter situation," McLellan said. "We do believe this is a credible threat, based on the initial calls that we got."

He said that upon arriving at campus, police saw enough evidence to suggest there was an active threat.

The incident came after a man enrolled at the University of Texas on Monday went on a stabbing spree with a large hunting knife at the school's Austin campus about 200 miles to the south of Irving, killing one student and wounding three others, police said.
