AMU students seek vice chancellor’s intervention in ‘pure vegetarian’ menu

One of the first major steps taken by Yogi Adityanath after he took over as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was to ban all the "illegal" slaughterhouses. This essentially shut down almost all such abattoirs, leading to meat going off from UP residents’ menus.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) hostels too were forced to serve the students a pure vegetarian menu, which became difficult to digest, since they were being served meat every day in their hostel mess earlier.

Fed up of this sudden change, students of AMU have written to the Zameer Uddin Shah, the vice-chancellor of the university, seeking his intervention.

The issue also caught the attention of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi, who tweeted, "15000 students in Aligarh Muslim University have not been served meat (buffalo) since 26 March and BJP says we are not targeting?"

In response to the letter, the management has said that the hostels require over 500 kg meat (buffalo) every day for their 19 dining halls, and the management is unable to arrange this quantity because of lack of operational slaughterhouses in Aligarh.

To this, Kalika Singh, regional officer of UP Pollution Control Board, said, "Of the seven slaughterhouses in Aligarh, four are operational at present. But due to non-availability of animals, they, too, are not providing any meat."
