American, United, JetBlue, and Southwest cancel hundreds of flights as a major snowstorm slams the Northeastern US

• Winter Storm Scott has resulted in thousands of delayed or canceled flights in New York, Boston, and others on Monday.
• Airlines including American, JetBlue, Delta, United, and Southwest have waived rebooking fees at affected airports. 
• Boston was forecast to receive up to 14 inches of snow, with public schools shuttered Monday. 

More than 700 flights were canceled and another 1,200 delayed on Monday as snow, ice, and rain caused by Winter Storm Scott swept through the Northeastern United States.

Boston's Logan International Airport was hit the hardest, with about 40% of departing flights delayed or canceled by 9 a.m. Monday, according to FlightAware. Average delays at the airport have eclipsed the three-hour mark with the maximum delay at more than five hours. 

The weather also affected New York City's three major airports, as well as Minneapolis-St. Paul and Washington D.C.'s three area hubs, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

According to the FAA's national airspace system status website, deicing programs were in place at airports in Boston; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Providence, Rhode Island at various points on Monday. 

Public schools in Boston, New York, and a slew of other towns throughout the metropolitan corridor were also closed due to weather. Massachusetts and Rhode Island were expected to see accumulations of around 6 to 14 inches, the National Weather Service said

Airlines including Southwest, Delta, American, JetBlue, and United have all offered free rebooking at affected airports. Be sure to check with your specific airline for waiver information.
