"We're excited to share that Indian customers will be able to use the world's leading cloud computing platform (AWS) in India in 2016 - and we believe India will be one of AWS's largest regions over the long term," Andy Jassy, Senior Vice President, AWS, said in a statement.

Research firm Gartner’s forecast report has said that the revenue of public cloud services in India will reach $838 million by the end of this year with a jump of almost 33% than the previous year. The report also mentioned India as a potent uphold for public cloud market.

Gartner also expects a total spending of about $1.9 billion on cloud service in India by 2018.

"Organizations in India seeking IT outsourcing services are increasingly turning to public cloud services as an alternative to traditional ITO offerings," said Ed Anderson, research vice president at Gartner. "In fact, cloud services are not only being used for low-value or transient workloads but also increasingly for production workloads, including some mission-critical initiatives,” he added.

India’s major business groups like Tata Motors, Future Group, Jubilant Food Works and startups like PayTM and Freshdesk are among those tens and thousands consumers of AWS. Microsoft too is setting up local data centers to speed growth of its Azure cloud service and IBM has also said that it would set up Softlayer data centers in India.

AWS contributes nearly $6 billion a year in revenue to Amazon, making it the largest public cloud infrastructure player in the world.
