What is the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019?
The bill seeks 10% reservation quota for the economically weaker sections (EWS) in educational institutions and government jobs for the residents of the state. India introduced the 10% reservation for EWS in January 2019.
This includes reservation for state government posts, government medical colleges, dental colleges, and polytechnics, according to PRS Legislative Research.
What are the provisions under the bill?
It enables the residents living close to the international border in Jammu and Kashmir to enjoy the benefits of reservations in education, promotions and jobs.
According to the proposed scheme, the residents from areas adjoining the Line of Control will have to work in those areas for a minimum of seven years.
Who will benefit?
All residents with an annual income below ₹800,000 will benefit from the 10% reservation quota, if the bill goes through.
Who is not eligible?
The residents with an annual income above ₹ 300,000 will not be included in the reservation category. However, this is not applicable to the people residing close to the international borders and the Actual Line of Control (ALOC).
