Ajey Mehta, head of Microsoft India's mobile division, will be moving to HMD Global along with 60-70 sales and marketing staff. HMD Global is the company recently created by Microsoft to bring back Nokia-branded phones into global markets, including India.

As per sources, the switch would be done after Microsoft's deal to sell its feature phone business to Foxconn and HMD closes in the second half of this year. The deal, however, doesn’t include Nokia's phone manufacturing plant based in Chennai, because it was frozen by tax authorities due to an ongoing Rs 20,000-crore tax dispute.

While initially the team led by Mehta will be responsible for taking the Nokia-brand feature phones forward in India, they would later add Android smartphones to their portfolio; however, no timeline has yet been announced by the company regarding the same.
