When United Airlines hired former White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest as chief communications officer, the airline's reputation was in shambles after it violently ejected a passenger in 2017.
Fast forward three years, and United is in the public crosshairs once more after warning it may cut its workforce even though it benefitted from the federal government's $2 trillion stimulus package. Now, it's fighting to restore goodwill with the public in a PR strategy led by Earnest.
The hiring of Earnest is just one example of how brands and public figures call on PR experts to navigate uncertain times and get them out of trouble. While the job market is shrinking under economic pressure, crises and opportunities are everywhere.
Business Insider is looking for the top free agents in PR. These are respected executives who may be looking for the next opportunity.
These pros understand the shifting media landscape, are trusted advisers to CEOs and CMOs, have a track record of defending and building brands' reputations, and deliver real results.
This list will be based on nominations as well as our own reporting. We will consider their previous jobs, their personal character, the organizations they've represented, and how effectively they advocated for their clients.
The list will be a combination of agency and in-house veterans, but we want to hear about mid-level staff as well.
Submit your nomination here or through the form below by April 28. The list will publish in early March.
