Add Google assistant in 2 lines if you don’t want to spend all your salary on Pixel

Oct 14, 2016, 16:42 IST
This year Google's phone launch was not about the hardware but rather more about the software and how will the future of smartphones look like. The factor differentiating (software side) Pixel from some other Android Nougat smartphones is the Google Assistant, which now you can add by simply embedding two lines of code. This was the good news, the bad news is "You phone should be rooted and we don't know if it'll work in your smartphone model specifically."

Unfortunately, Google Assistant, outside of the chatbot in Allo, will remain a Pixel-elite for the near future.

Assistant is not replacing Google Now in Android 7.1 update, implying that only a system update won't be sufficient to get Assistant on your phones

There is no doubt that Google Pixel is a fine device, maybe the best Android phone made so far. Comparing feature it surely surpasses iPhone 7. The Google Pixel will affect the sales of other Android devices, this is sure.

The competitive affordable smartphone market has obtusely forced consumers into questioning the worth of highly priced Android handset.

XDA user brianelv has posted a short guide on enabling Assistant, and it should work on any Android 7.0 (or higher) device.

How to?

As a matter of first importance, you'll require Nougat installed. If you have root, use a file explorer to find build.prop, under Root/System. Scan for the accompanying two values (or add them if you don't find them):

ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.opa.eligible_device=true

Save and reboot, then go to Settings>Apps, select Google, and clear its data and cache. It should reload with Assistant built in, which you can call up with a long home button press.
