An iPhone SE in action.

  • Japanese Apple rumours site Mac Otakara said Apple could be planning a September launch for the iPhone SE.
  • It said the phone could contain some of the best bits of the iPhone X, such as Face ID.
  • The iPhone SE is overdue a refresh.

A notorious Apple rumours site has added weight to the theory that the company is planning to launch a new iPhone SE later this year.

Following a regulatory filing last month, which hinted at a new version of the cheaper iPhone model, Mac Otakara raised the prospect of a September launch, saying Apple is eyeing dates late in the third quarter to introduce the handset.

Mac Otakara is thought to have a good track record on Apple rumours, but it isn't always accurate.

The Japanese website said the iPhone SE may take some of the best bits of the iPhone X, suggesting it could feature Face ID, a TrueDepth camera, and minimum bezel, or trim - which basically means more screen.

In his review of the iPhone X, Business Insider's Steve Kovach said Face ID works "flawlessly" and the phone follows other manufacturers in cramming "as much screen onto the front of the phone as possible."

The iPhone SE is overdue a refresh after it first launched in March 2016. It is a popular model, topping customer satisfaction surveys, becoming the top-selling smartphone in the UK in the year it launched, and Apple revealed last year that it is a strong performer in emerging markets like India.
