It seems Saudi women’s miseries know no ends. Just when they thought their country is progressing towards social equality by allowing women to vote, Saudi Arabian grand mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah issued a shocking official statement in the name of religion. This new fatwa allows a man to eat his wife or parts of her body if the husband was afflicted with severe hunger and had no food available. The cleric cited Islam's "sacrifice of women and obedience to her husband".

It raised concern and debate over social media since yesterday evening.

Saudi Arabia has been a country which flogged women mercilessly for ordinary activities. They can’t drive, can’t open bank accounts and now this! Where is progressive development headed to?
