A disillusioned dating startup founder just made an 'evil' app for ruining relationships

Damn Love

It can be tough to keep all of the dating apps and startups straight these days.

But the new app Damn Love distinguishes itself pretty easily: It's a game that rewards you for your ability to ruin relationships.

Journalist and Elle magazine advice columnist E. Jean Carroll created the game after throwing in the towel with another project, matchmaking service Tawkify.

She'd worked on Tawkify since 2012, but when she got some tech-heavy advice, she decided to stop, she told the Observer's Matt Kassel.

"We learned that you have to turn love into data," she told Kassel. "That's something that I'm totally against."

So she enlisted Dorothy Parker Brothers Games LLC to put together Damn Love, an iPhone game that asks its users to break imaginary couples up. Its tagline is "Damn Love - a cruel game for posh people."

The game's jaunty soundtrack and quirky art make it a totally different experience from other slick, streamlined, futuristic video games. Also, despite the fictional paramours, real-world names pepper the game's answers (mine's one of them since, full disclosure, I know both Carroll and Kassel from my days at the Observer).

Here's how it works.
