A British man has been arrested over the recent hack of electronic toy company VTech, the BBC is reporting.

The hack - first reported on by Motherboard - exposed the private data of nearly 6.5 million kids, as well as nearly 5 million parents.

VTech is based in Hong Kong and builds tablets and toys for children.

According to the BBC, the man arrested is 21 and from Berkshire, England.

The hack exposed photos of millions of children, as well as chatlogs and internal databases. The hacker was apparently able to gain access to VTech's system using an SQL injection - a decades-old type of hacking technique.

The hacker told Motherboard that the company has "sh**ty security," and that they are "pretty sure there's tons and tons of issues yet to be found." They also claimed they had no plans to sell the data, but just wanted to highlight the company's security flaws after discovering them. "Profiting from [database] dumps is not something I do. Especially not if children are involved!" They said. "I just want issues made aware of and fixed." There is no indication they had any accomplices.
