The latest in the Everything Shortage: $6 Bass Pro Shops trucker hats

  • The iconic Bass Pro Shops snap-back mesh cap appears to be having its moment.
  • A surge in popularity — including on TikTok — has led to shortages of the low-cost lids.

In a year that has seen shortages of everything from washing machines to cream cheese, a surprising item has joined the list: Bass Pro Shops' iconic snap-back mesh trucker's cap.

Typically available in a wide spectrum of bold colors, the store's website now offers just four options — Black, Olive, Gray, and Red — and even those are in limited quantities.

"We've had a kind of a run on our trucker Bass Pro caps," the company's chief customer officer John Paul Morris told the Wall Street Journal.

The $6 caps have long been an emblem of rural outdoor life, but have more recently made the jump into the mainstream with people from all walks of life wearing with their favorite hue — regardless of whether they've ever baited a hook.

"On TikTok, it's all you see. It's every different color hat…you see the trucker hat everywhere," John Wright, an entrepreneur in Nashville, told the Journal.

"We have a big Bass Pro Shops [store] here," he said. "You go into the store and all the colors are sold out, man."

The lack of options through Bass Pro Shops and its sister store, Cabela's, has some hat hunters heading to eBay where a slightly larger selection is available at a hefty mark-up from resellers. But even at $17 a piece, many colors are still unavailable.

In spite of the demand, Morris told the Journal the company has no plans of hiking prices, calling the hats "a great marketing tool."

"We love seeing our customers out there wearing their Bass Pro hats," he said.
