  • Roger Federer is the world's number one ranked tennis player yet again.
  • The 20-time Grand Slam champion has reclaimed top spot after Rafa Nadal's quarterfinal exit at the Madrid Open, last week.
  • Federer has not competed since March 24, but is looking to triumph for a ninth time at Wimbledon next month.

Roger Federer just became the world's number one ranked male tennis player for the fifth time in his career - despite not playing for two months.

Rafa Nadal's loss in last week's Madrid Open quarterfinal saw the Spaniard fall in the ATP rankings, thus allowing Federer to reclaim top spot this week.

Federer has not played since his second round loss to Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Miami Open on March 24. He decided to skip the clay season so he could be as fit as possible for Wimbledon in June - a tournament he has won a record eight times.

But now he is back at the top of the male rankings, enjoying his fifth stint as the best male singles tennis player on the planet.

Federer previously ruled the world from 2004 to 2008 (237 weeks), 2009 to 2010 (48 weeks), for 17 weeks in 2012, and for six weeks earlier this year.

This will be his 309th career week at number one.
