Roger Federer won in five sets after staging an epic comeback in the U.S. Open quarterfinal against 28-year-old Frenchman Gael Monfils on Thursday in New York.
Monfils, seeded 20th, took a commanding lead early in the match, winning the first two sets 6-4 and 6-3.
Federer began his dramatic comeback in the third set, winning it 6-4. "The difference in the third set was Federer made one unforced error compared to Monfils' nine," the BBC's Gigi Salmon wrote.

Perhaps the most noteworthy set came in the fourth, as both Federer and Monfils battled for control. Federer was ultimately able to force a fifth set after some of the most intense play of the match.
Here's how it looked:

Federer dominated the fifth set in what looked like a complete meltdown from Monfils. "Monfils has left the building," one of commentators on the livestream said.
Federer now moves on to the semifinals.
