New movie on Steve Jobs? Know what's different this time

“At 9:41, the planet’s gonna shift on its axis, now and forever. Two most significant events of the 20th century…”

When that’s the beginning of a Steve Jobs film trailer, if the first is something else, the second is anybody’s guess. Universal Studios has released a minute long trailer on the upcoming biographical drama film Steve Jobs. It offers a sneak peek, just enough to generate more interest. The company released a statement saying the film covers three iconic product launches - the Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT in 1988, and the iMac in 1998. It’ll also shed more light on his personal life and professional relationship with colleagues in Apple, NeXT and the original Mac team. The film’s an official adoption of Walter Isaacson’s biography on Steve Jobs.

The new trailer unfolds the tension and drama between Jobs and his contemporaries. It opens with Jobs with his back towards the camera for over 35 seconds, justifying himself and taking criticism. Then he walks onstage, and the voices wither away. The only sounds now are the crowd cheering and the innumerable camera clicks. You know he’s arrived.

One can’t help but miss the common factors behind every production on Steve Jobs - the overt glorification and constant focus on him as the innovator, rebel and visionary. This one’s no different. It’s everything an Apple fan would love to watch on their hero.
The question now is that if it’s all the same, do we need another Steve Jobs film? And what’s with this constant craze that leads high profile directors and actors to queue up to work on him when there’s already so much out there. It’s probably his magnetic personality, and immense popularity that once led Apple from the forefront.

Boyle’s Jobs Michael Fassbender definitely looks a lot different from Stern’s Ashton Kutcher. The last film fell short of critics’ expectations. IMDb rated it 5.9 out of 10, and Rotten Tomatoes a shoddy 27%. Let’s wait and see how this one fares.

Jobs is nothing short of a tech legend. Love him or hate him, you can’t help but wonder why the world would mourn the death of a businessman.

The current film is set to release on October 9th, 2015.
