  • WhatsApp has rolled out a new group voice and video calling feature which is currently available on Android and iOS.
  • You can call up to four people at a time.
  • The calls are end-to-end encrypted and engineered to work under slow networks.

Google Hangouts, Blue Jeans, Skype and the likes have something to worry about now. WhatsApp has finally rolled out their group voice and video calling feature and it is currently available on Android and iOS.

Just like Instagram, one can now make video calls with up to four people. It is assumed that WhatsApp will soon increase the number of people you will be able to call simultaneously. WhatsApp had been supporting video calling since 2016, however, until now, it had only been restricted to two participants.

WhatsApp claims that just like texts, these video and voice calls will also be end-to-end encrypted and also says that the calls are engineered to work in slow network situations.

The messaging app claims that it registers about two billion minutes of WhatsApp calling per day and the number is expected to only increase. Considering its extensive use, the conference-call feature was a much-anticipated update.

The rollout of this feature marks the support of group video calling on all three Facebook-owned apps - Instagram, Messenger, and now, WhatsApp.

How to use the feature

You need to first make a one-on-one video or voice call with a person. The next step is to tap on the new “add participant” button in the top right corner of the screen. Then you may add any of your contacts to the conference call.
