Kate Winslet says she's making a 'little list' of ways to celebrate her 50th birthday, and it doesn't include a huge party
  • Kate Winslet turns 50 this October, and she's not planning an extravagant celebration.
  • The "Titanic" star said she plans on spending her 50th year doing "50 remarkable things."

Kate Winslet's idea of how she'll spend her 50th birthday is simple: she'll cook dinner for her friends.

"I don't like big parties, and I can't stand surprises," Winslet told Harpers Bazaar in an interview on Wednesday. She turns 50 this October.

When she's not acting, the "Titanic" actor lives by a rather simple routine. She shops for groceries, takes the Tube, and indulges in butter and cheese, she told the fashion magazine.

Her birthday is on October 5, and she said she wants to spend her 50th year doing "50 remarkable things."

"Whether that's a particular hike I've never done, or a place I've never been, acts of kindness — I'm gathering a little list," she added.

Other celebrities have celebrated differently.

Victoria Beckham threw a star-studded 50th birthday party this April, which included guests like Tom Cruise, Gordon Ramsay, and Salma Hayek.

In 2019, Jennifer Lopez celebrated her 50th birthday bash with fireworks, dance numbers, and a black-and-gold tiered cake.

How birthday milestones prompt us to reflect

Turning 50 is a milestone — it's officially entering midlife. Such milestones prompt people to think about how they spend their lives, Alan Castel, a psychologist, previously told BI.

"At certain 'landmark' birthdays (30, 40, 50), research has shown that people will re-evaluate their age and take on or change habits," he said.

In 2018, BI compiled a list of 20 things to master before turning 50. These include being a mentor, spending more time alone, and even figuring out how to detect a lie.

Turning 50 also brings fresh pearls of wisdom. Writer Bob Curley previously wrote for BI that entering his fifth decade of life taught him that 50 is not an old age — "You are really only as old as you act and feel," he wrote.

He learned that it's also better to live a simpler life and think with intention, he added.

Winslet has a similar sentiment. "I just want to live my life with sincere intentions and a decent amount of good grace," she said.

A representative for Winslet did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
