Daily Show host Jon Stewart slammed Republicans for what he called a "craven political calculation" on the topic of immigration reform Wednesday night.

Stewart played clips of the past few years of Republicans — including presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, and Herman Cain — bashing immigration reform and saying the word "comprehensive" only means "amnesty."

Stewart called the news that a bipartisan group of Senators put forward a framework for immigration reform, including a path to citizenship, a "surprise."

"Why the sudden change, Republicans?" Stewart said. "Was it because you looked into your hearts and realized that people who are willing to risk prison or worse just to do our least glamorous, most dangerous work deserve at least a basic level of humanity?"

He then played a clip of Sen. John McCain saying it was because Republicans got slammed among Latino voters in 2012 election.

"OK, or that. That's another reason — a craven political calculation to squeeze out enough votes to make Nevada competitive again," Stewart quipped.
