Fire at India’s largest army ammunition depot, at least 17 reported dead

A major fire broke out at CAD (Central Ammunition Depot) in Maharashtra's Pulgoan region, the largest army ammunition depot in India, killing at least 17 security personnel, including 15 Defence Security Corp (DSC) jawans and two Army officers, one of them being a Lieutenant Colonel.

The fire is also said to have injured at least 19 security personnel, which spread to a number of sheds housing ammunitions, bombs and other explosive items.

As per sources, nearby villages have been evacuated and army helicopters have been called for helping the evacuation of the injured security personnel.

"The main fire at one of the sheds has been extinguished. The situation is being stabilised. Secondary fire and explosions cannot be ruled out now," an Army officer said while not commenting on the reasons of the fire.

An enquiry has been ordered for the incident.
