Everyone gets high on wines, but sommeliers or wine stewards are the
ones who actually know all the highs and lows of alcoholic beverages. Wine-and-food
pairing is a full-fledged service and requires high skills, as well as
knowledge of different wines. There are no sommelier schools in India as of
now, and for higher professional training, one needs to go abroad. However, for starting, you can undertake a
certificate course from institutes situated in cities like Delhi,
Mumbai, Bangalore
and Chennai, and then start working with a hotel/restaurant.
Salary of experienced sommeliers can go up to Rs 1 lakh or more in India,
and it is much higher in foreign countries where the wine industry has
flourished.
