The Blue Ridge Parkway — both a national park and roadway that spans 469 miles — offers breathtaking views of the mountains. Go in the fall for incredibly vibrant colors.
The Southern Appalachian region is home to many handmade crafts, some of which can be found at the Folk Art Center. The center even features live demonstrations.
The 8,000-acre Biltmore Estate dates back to the late 1800s, and includes America's largest privately-owned home, which looks like a château straight out of France. It was built by shipping and railroad heir George Washington Vanderbilt II.

Originally opened as a marketplace in 1929, the Grove Arcade closed after World War II, and reopened as a shopping center in 2002. Today, it is filled with excellent boutiques and restaurants, and is one of the largest shopping centers in the South.
