Five powerful pictures that best portray the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks

It’s been fourteen years since the September 11th attacks, commonly known as the 9/11 attacks but the wounds of the dreaded day are yet to heal.

The attacks changed America and the world as we know it forever, with terrorism taking a front seat. It also took the lives of millions of innocent Americans, including policemen and firefighters and caused destruction like none other.

And, all it took was 19 militants in airplanes to bring down the mighty Twin Towers.

Though, the picture of a rainbow emerging from the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan a day for the September 11th anniversary taken by Queens resident Ben Sturner did provide some much needed respite, with people brandishing the picture as a symbol of hope and renewal, it is quite difficult to erase the memories of that day.

On the 14th anniversary, Business Insider brings to you five images which describe the aftermath of the attacks aptly.
