Britain just got dragged into the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

The German carmaker on Wednesday confirmed that 1.2 million cars in the UK contain the software that was found to be falsifying emissions data in the US, the BBC reports.

All the cars involved run on diesel and include VW brand, Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW vans.

Volkswagen will be announcing how British car owners can check if their vehicles are affected in the next few days.

US regulators discovered earlier this month that many Volkswagen diesel cars were fitted with software that meant emission data came out lower when cars were being tested than when they were out on the open road.

Emissions were as much as 40 times higher than test results in the lab, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. An estimated 11 million cars worldwide contain the software.

Despite the announcement, VW shares are still up around 2% in Frankfurt today. It's the car makers first share price gains in four trading sessions.
