IAC-owned <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/">Urbanspoon</a> has been acquired by Indian startup <a href="https://www.zomato.com/">Zomato</a>, a restaurant directory service, the companies announced Monday.
Sources report the deal is between $50-60 million. <a href="http://www.geekwire.com/2015/restaurant-directory-zomato-buying-urbanspoon-part-u-s-expansion/">A report from GeekWire</a>&#xa0;published Sunday said Urbanspoon CEO Keela Robison would depart as part of the acquisition, but Zomato did not confirm that information.
Zomato, which was founded in New Delhi in 2008, has expanded to provide 330,000 listings for restaurants in countries including&#xa0;Canada, Brazil, and Ireland.&#xa0;
With the acquisition of Urbanspoon, Zomato will break into the US market, competing against services like Foursquare and Yelp and bringing the total number of countries served by Zomato to 22.
Unlike its competitors, Zomato's approach to getting information about restaurants is grassroots: the company hires locals to curate restaurant information, take pictures, scan menus, and create recommendations. Zomato also includes real-time information about the restaurant and lets users book tables through its iOS and Android apps.
"Zomato has experienced phenomenal growth in recent years, and our customer bases complement each other's perfectly,"&#xa0;Urbanspoon CEO&#xa0;Keela Robison said. "Zomato's significant investments in people and technology will bring Urbanspoon customers, restaurant owners, and food bloggers a number of new capabilities and features. We're excited to combine our strengths to accelerate growth."
Zomato has acquired six local restaurant search companies in New Zealand, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Italy and Turkey in the past six months, including <a href="http://menumania.seccionamarilla.com.mx/" target="_blank">MenuMania</a>&#xa0;in New Zealand and <a href="http://www.cibando.com/" target="_blank">Cibando</a>&#xa0;in Italy. 
Urbanspoon, which was founded in 2006 and in 2009 was acquired by Barry Diller's IAC, is Zomato's first US acquisition.
"We have been planning our entry into the North American market for some time, and Urbanspoon's excellent reputation and foothold in North America, Australia and the UK provides the perfect opportunity for our global growth," said Deepinder Goyal, Zomato's CEO and founder. "We are delighted to welcome Urbanspoon and their audience into Zomato. We will soon be integrating the two platforms to bring the best of both products to all of our users."&#xa0;
The acquisition will more than triple Zomato's restaurant inventory from 300,000 to more than 1,000,000 restaurants around the world.&#xa0;In coming months, Urbanspoon traffic's will move to Zomato.com, and all Urbanspoon app users will use the Zomato app.
Zomato&#xa0;<a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/11/18/you-say-zomato/">raised $60 million in venture funding in November</a>&#xa0;from Sequoia, Info Edge and Vy Capital, bringing the total amount of funding raised by the company to $113 million.

Zomato, An India-Based Restaurant Directory Startup, Just Acquired IAC's Urbanspoon To Make Its Move Into The US

Online food portal <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword>, which recently received an investment from <keyword id="80004" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Info-Edge">Info Edge</keyword> last year, has acquired US based food portal Urban Spoon for $52 million. Info Edge made the disclosure to the National Stock Exchange (<keyword id="6354646" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE">NSE</keyword>) in a letter dated January 12, 2015. 
	 
	Apart from the US, Urban Spoon has operations in Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. “The transaction is an all cash transaction amounting to $52 million,” the company said in a letter. 
	 
	It should be noted that Info Edge has invested nearly Rs 1.85 billion in food guide portal Zomato Media Private Limited. “…Upon completion of the allotment/transfer of shares against the said investment aggregate amount of investment in Zomato will be about Rs 3.27 billion. Info Edge will hold 55.13% of the equity share capital of Zomato. The overall holding on a fully converted and diluted basis will remain at 50.1%,” said the company in the letter.

Top VC firm <keyword id="136147" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India</keyword> has sold 17.2 crore shares of <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> in two tranches in the open market, lowering down its stake in the online food aggregator to 4.4 per cent from earlier 6.41 per cent. In a fresh filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (<keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword>), Zomato said Sequoia Capital India sold some 6.7 crore shares in the September 6-October 14, 2021 period and 10.5 crore shares between June 27-August 25, 2022. The stock sales were performed by <keyword id="14821825" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india-growth-investment-holdings" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India Growth Investment Holdings</keyword> I and <keyword id="13302083" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sci-growth-investments-ii" source="Orion">SCI Growth Investments II</keyword>, according to Zomato. <keyword id="10639596" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sequoia-capital-india-investments-iv" source="Orion">Sequoia Capital India Investments IV</keyword> also received 45,153,346 incremental equity shares on August 10 owing to the acquisition of quick-commerce delivery platform Blinkit, which further has a lock-in period of one year. Sequoia Capital India joins a list of private market investors like Delivery Hero, Moore Strategic Ventures, and <keyword id="526777" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tiger-global" source="Orion">Tiger Global</keyword>, which have sold their shares in Zomato in the past months, either in open market or via block deals, as the online food delivery platform's stock gets hammered. On Friday, Zomato shares closed around Rs 61.85. Earlier this month, ride-hailing platform Uber sold its 7.8 per cent stake worth over $390 million in Zomato. Uber, which suffered around $707 million loss in its Zomato investment in the first half of this year, sold its share in the food delivery aggregator via a block deal on stock exchanges that has been bought by several global and Indian VCs. The Zomato block deal was executed at Rs 50.44 per share equivalent to 612 million or 7.8 per cent of total outstanding shares. In a statement to IANS, Zomato had said that "We are a public company and are not privy to what our shareholders are doing with their shares". According to the company, the losses for Blinkit are coming down every month -- from Rs 2,040 million (about $26 million) in January 2022 to Rs 929 million ($12 million) in July. The 10-minute delivery platform was acquired by Zomato for Rs 4,447 crore (about $568 million). Indian food-delivery startup Zomato files for a $1.1 billion IPO as the country battles a catastrophic wave of COVID-19 infections

In its study “Unicorn League”, the company has recently examinef what these $1 billion companies have in common, the schools which breed the most founders etc. 
 With 51 unicorn founders, <keyword id="33081" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford">Stanford</keyword> tops the chart followed by Harvard (37 founders). 
 At fourth position are IITs with 12 unicorn founders that include <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> (<keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>), Abhay Singhal (InMobi), Ankit Bhati and <keyword id="1543567" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhavish-Aggarwal">Bhavish Aggarwal</keyword> (Ola), <keyword id="476451" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepinder-Goyal">Deepinder Goyal</keyword> (Zomato), <keyword id="1003724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jyoti-Bansal">Jyoti Bansal</keyword> (AppDynamics), K.V. The study also found that 94% of founders were male, while only 30 of the 498 founders were female. 67% of unicorns were created by co-founders and 33% by single founders. For 60% of the founders, their current unicorn is the first and only company they’ve built. 
 
Also, those who founded more than one company have, on average, a 34.5% higher valuation than those who founded just one company ($4.29 billion versus $5.88 billion). 
 
The US has the most unicorn headquarters (144), followed by China (47) and India (10).The UK (9) leads the pack in Europe, followed by Germany (6). California (95) boasts the most headquarters, followed by New York (19) and Beijing (18). Consumer Internet (49) is the most common unicorn sector, ahead of software (48), e-commerce (37), financial services (22) and healthcare (18).

Chinese vaccine for COVID-19 shows 79.34% effectiveness in late stage trial

The MOHhad said on Sunday that it aims to begin with vaccinating the elderly, starting with those aged 70 and above, from February 2021. Thereafter, other Singaporeans and long-term residents who are medically eligible for vaccination will get inoculation.  Byju’s had been planning <a href="https://techcircle.vccircle.com/2019/01/16/byju-s-buys-ar-based-learning-platform-osmo-for-120-mn">overseas expansion</a> for a long time by collaborating with partners in the UK, Singapore and Australia, among others. The deal is expected to benefit both companies since Byju’s was seeking to also become a ‘content-driven platform’ aimed at a younger audience — kids of three to seven years of age are Osmo’s target market. While Byju’s apps mostly target school kids across grades 4-12 Byju’s eponymous founder Byju Raveendran <a href="https://news.crunchbase.com/news/in-international-push-indian-edtech-company-byju-buys-osmo-for-120m/">told</a> Crunchbase the company currently has over 1,000 people dedicated to video and game development. Other Indian unicorns in the league eyeing global expansion India’s growing unicorns are now aggressively looking to test overseas markets, keen to have a global presence, and many have already seen some success. The homegrown food delivery unicorn, Zomato, expanded internationally in 2012, starting with Dubai. Since then, the company has grown multifold with an array of acquisitions. In fact, Swiggy has been considering offshore expansion as well, but is currently focussed on <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/318201">hyperlocal services.</a> Bucking the general trend of international companies expanding in the Indian market last year, digital wallets company PayTm <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/after-revolutionizing-transactions-in-india-digital-payments-company-paytm-seeks-to-conquer-japan/articleshow/66329611.cms">launched</a> its payments app ‘PayPay’ in Japan. The hotel chain, OYO rooms, has also had a great year in terms of <a href="https://inc42.com/features/2018-in-review-what-were-indian-unicorns-up-to-this-year/">international investments</a>. The company forayed into China, Japan, Spain and the UK among others. The company, with its offshore expansion, is looking to have nearly 2.3 million rooms internationally by 2023.
