High levels of antibiotic resistance in bacteria are causing life-threatening bloodstream infections, according to the latest report released by the WHO. For the first time, the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS) report released on Friday provides analyses of antimicrobial resistance (<keyword id="149212" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="amr" source="Orion">AMR</keyword>) rates in national testing coverage, AMR trends since 2017, and data on antimicrobial consumption in humans in 27 countries. The report shows more than 50 per cent resistance in bacteria, which frequently causes bloodstream infections that require treatment with last-resort antibiotics. Meanwhile, common bacterial infections are becoming increasingly resistant to treatments. More than 60 per cent of Neisseria gonorrhoea isolates, a common sexually transmitted disease, have shown resistance to the common oral antibacterial ciprofloxacin. WHO's Essential Medicines List divides antibiotics into three categories: access, watch and reserve. Medicines in the access group are available at all times as treatments for a wide range of common infections; the watch group lists antibiotics that are recommended as first or second choice treatments for a small number of infections, while the reserve group is for antibiotics which should only be used as a last resort in the most severe circumstances. The report shows that bloodstream infections due to resistant E. coli, <keyword id="396235" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="salmonella" source="Orion">Salmonella</keyword> and gonorrhoea increased by at least 15 per cent compared to 2017. More research is required to identify how this is related to increased hospitalisations and antibiotic treatments during the Covid-19 pandemic, the WHO says. WHO concerned over increasing antibiotic resistance in human infections

EU to train up to 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers

UN rights chief urges Musk to ensure human rights in Twitter management

Iran signs $6.5 billion gas contract with Russia, gas swap deal reportedly being finalized

Vietnam reports 260,000 dengue cases, 102 deaths

The figures were carved by the indigenous Rapa Nui people sometime between the years 1400 and 1650 and positioned to form a ring around the island, facing inland. The statues symbolised spiritual devotion for the Rapa Nui, embodying the spirit of a prominent ancestor. Each one was considered to be the person's living incarnation. As temperatures begin to drop, health experts in the US have expressed concerns over the triple threat of flu, Covid-19 and <keyword id="12300615" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="respiratory-syncytial-virus" source="Orion">Respiratory Syncytial Virus</keyword> (<keyword id="591272" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rsv" source="Orion">RSV</keyword>), urging the public to get the required preventive vaccinations and be aware of symptoms of severe illness. While the three are all highly contagious respiratory infections caused by different viruses, RSV usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, but can be dangerous for some infants and young children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<keyword id="6379474" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cdc" source="Orion">CDC</keyword>). Surveillance data collected by the CDC clearly shows a rise in RSV cases nationwide in recent weeks, with cases detected by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests more than tripling over the past two months, reports <keyword id="106387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xinhua-news-agency" source="Orion">Xinhua news agency</keyword>. Children with underlying health conditions, such as chronic lung disease or heart problems, may also be at higher risk for severe illness from respiratory viruses, said Nusheen Ameenuddin, a paediatrician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. If left untreated, severe cases of Covid-19, RSV or the flu can develop into pneumonia, an infection of the lungs, said Dr Peter Hotez, a co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children's Hospital. RSV is also known to cause bronchiolitis, an inflammation of the small airways in the lungs, according to the CDC. Both pneumonia and bronchiolitis can be deadly, especially in children with underlying health conditions, according to experts. Hotez urged parents to get their children vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu. "There are three viruses circulating", he said, "and if you can take one or two of them off the table by getting your child vaccinated, that makes things much more straightforward". The Covid-19 vaccination rate in the US lags behind that of many other high-income countries. Less than half of the total booster-eligible population has received a dose, according to the latest CDC data. About 226.6 million people, or 68.2 per cent of the total US population, completed a primary series. But only 49.1 per cent of the total booster-eligible population has received a booster dose, CDC data shows. Researchers found that the rate of warming in the upper 2,000 metres of the ocean in 2010 more than doubled that of 1960, and predicted that if actions were not taken, the rate of ocean warming would be four times larger than the current level by 2090, with dire consequences for all life on Earth, <keyword id="106387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xinhua-news-agency" source="Orion">Xinhua news agency</keyword> quoted the study published in Nature Reviews journal as saying. Authors from the University of Auckland, the National Center of Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, and research institutes from China, France, Australia and the UK, said that if the world succeeds in limiting global surface temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, as per the Paris Agreement, the acceleration of ocean warming will stop at around 2030. Other parts will become wetter as rainfalls happen in bigger downbursts, according to the study. Coastal regions are increasingly vulnerable in association with rising sea levels, storm surges and adverse impacts on ecosystems, the study showed. Looking back, Georgieva noted that an integrated economy led to the tripling of the world economy in the last decades, in which emerging markets and developing economies quadrupled, and advanced economies doubled. "So if we want to have a secure future, we do need to retain that efficiency that comes from an integrated economy," she added.
