Fans Are Saying The New Wonder Woman Costume Looks A Lot Like Xena: Warrior Princess

<p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucy-lawless-fans-campaign-the-mandalorian-gina-carano-star-wars-2021-10">Lucy Lawless</a> is well aware of the "long shadow" her iconic role in "Xena: Warrior Princess" has cast over her career.</p><p>The series, which aired 134 episodes across six seasons, is what introduced her to the masses. And while Lawless wasn't particularly fond of performing the show's grueling action scenes at the time, she carried that fighting spirit along with her well after "Xena" wrapped in 2001 — particularly in her drive to create stories she believes in.</p><p>Her latest, the Acorn TV series "My Life is Murder," is one example of a project Lawless fought to bring to life. In it, the actor plays private detective Alexa Crowe, who has a talent for solving bizarre murders that unfold in Australia and New Zealand.</p><p>While Lawless, 56, was immediately drawn to the charming, bread-baking PI, not everyone felt as strongly about bringing the character's story to the screen. But Lawless was determined to make it happen and opted to sign on as an executive producer.</p><p>"When you have the idea, but no money, you have to go fight for it," she says.</p><p>For the latest interview in BI's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/role-play-series">Role Play series</a>, Lawless talks about hating her stuntwork on "Xena," why a reboot wouldn't be all that groundbreaking now, and what it was like grappling with the "culture of anxiety" when she joined the "Battlestar Galactica" cast.</p><h2>On why getting cast as Xena was 'a great big cosmic joke'</h2><div type="image" title="Lucy Lawless as Xena in &quot;Xena: Warrior Princess.&quot;" height="1415" width="1918" msid="111404845" hostid="261" sizebytes="147956"></div><p><strong>It's been over 20 years since "Xena: Warrior Princess" ended. If you had the chance to do it all again, what would you do differently about the series?</strong></p><p>Well, there's some things I probably would've left to early CGI, like fire-breathing… I just blew my eyebrows off! Crazy stuff like that. I wouldn't have done all the things where I got injured — I broke my pelvis on the Jay Leno show doing a "Xena" skit that I could have lived without. But not much else. It was great fun.</p><p><strong>Is there anything about the show that you originally weren't keen on, but over time you've kind of come around on?</strong></p><p>Yes, the action! I hated it every day of my life, and now I will say I don't want to do it ever again either, but it did me the power of good because I was forced to learn things that I'd been so hopeless at school.</p><p>My nickname at school was "Unco," for uncoordinated. Then suddenly to find myself cast as "Xena: Warrior Princess" was a great big cosmic joke.</p><p><strong>Xena has become a queer icon because of </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/non-canon-lgbtq-ships-pride-month-supercorp-destiel-finnpoe-2022-5"><strong>her unofficial relationship with Gabrielle</strong></a><strong>. If they ever managed to get a reboot off the ground again, would you prefer to see an outright gay Xena?</strong></p><p>I don't think that would even be particularly mark-worthy these days, would it? The kids seem to be so down with all that stuff. It would be completely fine. Would I prefer it? Yeah, well I think the case was settled on that by the end of the series. We were like, "No, she's totally gay."</p><p>But they didn't say it because in those days, people for whom that would've been against their beliefs, or whatever the hell, and who didn't want to see it, they didn't have to. People who <em>did</em> want to see it could. So it was sort of working on all levels in those days. But I think she definitely was gay, and that was part of the master plan.</p><p>Now I look back, and the writers all knew what they were doing and the fans picked up on it immediately. Renee [O'Connor] and I were the last to know. We saw it coming over the wire from the Village Voice that our characters were being held as a couple of gay icons. We were like, "What? Isn't that hilarious?" Well, we thought it was cool, and interesting, and edgy. But we had no idea that that was always the plan.</p><p><strong>It seems like you get asked about the possibility of a "Xena" revival in every interview. I've just done it too. But do you feel like audiences now know you more for your other work?</strong></p><p>It is interesting. I would say predominantly that "Xena" is the thing that's cast the longest shadow. But "Parks and Rec" has people who don't know what "Xena" is, but they do know "Parks and Rec" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or something. So that's lovely. I've covered a lot of different bases of related, but not necessarily overlapping, pools of audiences.</p><h2>On the spoiler culture on 'Battlestar Galactica' and where Ron Swanson and Diane would be now</h2><div type="image" title="Tricia Helfer as Number Six and Lucy Lawless as D'anna Biers in &quot;Battlestar Galactica.&quot;" height="1368" width="2046" msid="111404842" hostid="261" sizebytes="110122"></div><p><strong>You also joined </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-sci-fi-shows-according-to-fans"><strong>"Battlestar Galactica"</strong></a><strong> in season two to play D'anna Biers. How did you handle establishing yourself in that kind of environment when the cast and crew have already figured out their working relationships?</strong></p><p>That was a weird one. Because in my opinion, the actors were kept in a state of insecurity, which I don't agree with as an executive producer. I don't agree with that at all. Because they didn't want any spoilers getting out there at the time — people didn't know if they were going to be killed off, and they were extremely nervous.</p><p>So there was a culture of anxiety on that show.</p><p>Plus you're filming all day in the dark. You get to work in the dark, you are in space all day, and then you come out, and it's dark again. That isn't conducive to a very joyful, lighthearted environment, because human beings need the green of trees and the blue of the sky and all that stuff to be truly mentally happy and nourished on some level.</p><p>It was difficult coming in, because they felt if I was coming in, then one of them was on the way out. They were really nice people so I could tell it wasn't because they were awful, but there was a little bit of a culture of fear. And that was a shame.</p><p><strong>Ten years ago you also played Diane, Ron Swanson's third wife in "Parks and Recreation." What do you think those two are doing in 2024?</strong></p><p>I don't know, getting out the vote, I guess! That would be interesting because Ron would be on this crazy libertarian attack and I wonder if he would be… That might break them up actually, this election in America.</p><h2>On 'Ash vs. Evil Dead' and wearing prosthetic entrails to lunch on set</h2><div type="image" title="Lucy Lawless as Ruby in &quot;Ash vs. Evil Dead.&quot;" height="1200" width="1744" msid="111404567" hostid="261" sizebytes="70474"></div><p><strong>In terms of your characters, Ruby in </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-ashe-vs-evil-dead-will-be-amazing-2015-10"><strong>"Ash vs. Evil Dead"</strong></a><strong> is a personal favorite.</strong></p><p>Really?!</p><p><strong>Yeah. The wild, campy horror is great. What are the biggest challenges when working with gory prosthetics? I'm just thinking of season three when a demon baby eats its way out of Ruby…</strong></p><p>It's just another day at the office. We didn't think twice about it. It was quite fun. I've got a lot of photos of me sitting about with four kilos of guts hanging out at the front of that dress.</p><p>Having to sit around in that all day and people having to eat with you, with your guts hanging out… it was kind of amusing. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bruce-campbell-evil-dead-rise-lee-cronin-cameo-cryptic-tease-2023-4">Bruce Campbell</a> would think nothing of it.</p><p><strong>The show wrapped up after three seasons, but Sam Raimi is still producing "Evil Dead" movies. What would you do with Ruby if you got the chance to revisit her?</strong></p><p>I think we'd have the Ron Swanson relationship, where she could be Bruce's hideous wife. They'd have such a terrible relationship. It would be hilarious. They'd be incredibly unsupportive of one another and yet it'd be inescapable.</p><h2>On thinking directing was a 'crap job' before she tried it herself</h2><div type="image" title="A picture of photojournalist Margaret Moth seen in &quot;Never Look Away.&quot;" height="1530" width="2676" msid="111404839" hostid="261" sizebytes="62350"></div><p><strong>You've got nearly a hundred credits to your name. What's the one project you wish got more attention?</strong></p><p>"My Life is Murder" and my new film, "Never Look Away," which is my directorial debut.</p><p><strong>How did you come onto that project? Because a documentary about a war journalist is not something fans would typically associate you with.</strong></p><p>I've been offered many times to direct, and it always looked like such a crap job. But I got an email from a guy called Joe Duran, who was the subject's best friend, and he said, "Do you want to make a film about Margaret Moth? I'm the heir to her estate and I've got all her photographs."</p><p>My mind flew back to 1992 when all of New Zealand was glued to CNN because one of our own, a CNN camera person, had her face shot off in Sarajevo and wasn't expected to survive. Well, Margaret did survive.</p><p>I wrote back and said, "Yes, I will find the money, and I will find the producers, and we will make this." A month later, we were saying, "Who do we get to direct this?" And somebody said, "Well, why don't you do it?"</p><p>And I was like, "No, come on. I don't direct." And then it became, "Well, yes, why don't I? Because nobody cares about this in the way that I do and nobody believes in it in the way that I do."</p><p>I was there before the money on that one, just like I was with "My Life is Murder." When you have the idea, but no money, you have to go fight for it. That's real producing.</p><p>Shooting "My Life is Murder" is like a ray of sunshine because I'm working with three of my best friends, and we laugh like idiots all day long. But then working on a film is incredible torture. Lucy Lawless says the 2024 election would break up Ron Swanson and her 'Parks and Rec' character 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A TikToker and a small-business owner are in a feud over a collaboration gone wrong.</li><li>Siobhan Bell warned others about Charlie Hayes, saying she didn't fulfil her side of the deal.</li></ul><p>A s<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/smallbusiness">mall-business</a> owner posted a TikTok last week, warning others not to work with a certain influencer, saying she never fulfilled her side of their agreement when she sent over some clothes for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-reach-out-to-brands-influencer-collaboration-post-email">a collaboration</a>.</p><p>It's one of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/why-customer-dramas-go-viral-and-make-people-angry-tiktok-2023-5">many petty dramas</a> that have taken over the platform, where <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.insider.com/etsy-refund-for-200-plastic-cup-spirals-angry-viral-tiktoks-2023-2"><u>art sales gone wrong</u></a>, <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.insider.com/dispute-over-rainbow-cake-goes-viral-on-tiktok-2023-4"><u>disappointing birthday cakes</u></a>, and <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.insider.com/etsy-store-insults-woman-who-candle-refund-sparks-viral-tiktok-2023-1"><u>rude messages from Etsy sellers</u></a> have all spiraled into viral frenzies.</p><p>Siobhan Bell, who goes by the name Xena on her business page where she up-cycles and reworks vintage clothes, said she had sent TikToker Charlie Hayes a box full of items including some shorts, a top, gloves, and sunglasses back in June.</p><p>She said Hayes had initially agreed to make some content with the pieces, but hadn't kept to her side of the deal.</p><p>In the now-deleted post, Bell also warned other small businesses not to work with Hayes, and accused her of being unsupportive of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/incorporating-sustainability-into-your-wardrobe-2020-3">sustainable fashion</a>.</p><p>Hayes responded with her own video, denying Bell's allegations, and saying she had been waiting to wear the outfit at an appropriate event, as the items were beach-themed.</p><p>Hayes told Business Insider she had not been aware of any conditions when she'd agreed to the collaboration. She said she had not seen Bell's video until she received messages from someone saying they were Bell's friend, calling her a "thief."</p><p>"After being called a thief, I was like, look, I don't really want to work with you anymore," Hayes told BI.</p><p>"I said I'd send the outfit back. I did take a while, mind you. But I said to her, I don't really have a sense of urgency after being called a thief. I'll do it when I can — I'm working all the time and I've got a little boy."</p><p>Hayes said she then saw Bell's video telling other brands not to work with her, and decided against sending the products back.</p><p>She also remembered she had posted a video where she unboxed all the items back in June — she'd just forgotten about it. She was reminded when one of her followers left a comment.</p><p>"I swear you posted about this delivery when you received it and said you were excited to style them?" they wrote.</p><p>This, Hayes thought, was fulfilling her end of the deal.</p><p>She said she then asked Bell to remove her video and apologize. That's when she saw Bell's friend — the one that had called her a thief — had made a video as well, doubling down on the accusations. It has now been deleted.</p><p>"She posted a video saying, well, she is a thief. I stand by that. She didn't wear the outfit, so that makes her a thief," Hayes said. "So I was like, I'm not sending this back. You guys can get fucked, basically."</p> <p>However, Bell pushed back on Hayes' claims, saying they did have an agreement in place.</p><p>"The agreement Charlie and I had was to post a video styling my items, which I never received," she said in a TikTok. (In a separate TikTok she posted a screenshot of a message where she asked Hayes to "make a video in the fit.")</p><p>She also claimed Hayes had set the unboxing video to private, meaning it wasn't available to view.</p><p>"After three months had passed by, I messaged Charlie, asked her if she liked the items, and when would she be posting a video, and I didn't receive a reply," Bell said. "So therefore she didn't stick to her end of the agreement."</p><p>She said a lot of people had told her they should have written up a contract to avoid this situation in the first place.</p><p>"I can see your point, but I just didn't think that it would end up like this," she said.</p><p>Bell said she thought it would have been "common decency" for Hayes to let her know the video was going to take a while. She also asked Hayes' fans to stop "sending hate" to her friend, and leaving negative reviews on her business page.</p><p>"I'm not slandering anyone's name, I'm just telling the truth about my experience with Charlie Hayes," she said.</p><p>BI reached out to Bell for comment but did not receive a response.</p> <p>Bell also commented on Hayes' TikTok asking her to show the original unboxing video. Hayes then posted a short clip from the video, posted in June, of her opening the box and taking out the shorts, and another where she read out Bell's business name, Xena.</p><p>Hayes told BI the situation was "messy," and she didn't expect such a fallout because she thought the agreement between her and Bell was casual.</p><p>She said she usually works with brands she likes and has built relationships with, so it "wasn't weird" that there was no contract.</p><p>"That's why I didn't think there was any pressure to post, because I've worked with so many brands before that have been totally fine with that," she said.</p><p>She added that she thought Bell continued making videos because they were racking up views.</p><p>"I don't think it was that calculated to begin with," she said. "I just think she was a bit of an opportunist about it once she realized that that's what was happening."</p><p>Viewers were divided on the situation, seeing both sides. Many of Hayes' fans flooded Bell's comments, accusing her of "slandering" Hayes and insulting her business. Others said they understood her perspective, and three months was a long time for Hayes to have had the products and not post the video she agreed to.</p><p>Many, however, thought the whole thing could have been handled privately.</p><p>"I hate when these things happen on TikTok because everyone dogpiles," one person wrote. "You're best to take this offline, remove the videos, and both apologize."</p>

A TikToker's feud with a small-business owner over a collaboration video has spiraled out of control

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Xena Stryker left corporate America several years ago after feeling discriminated against. </li><li>She now runs her own architecture-consulting firm and feels in control of her life. </li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Xena Stryker, 35, an architectural designer who previously worked in corporate America, about why she decided to start her own firm. The company, <a href="https://www.xenadesignfirm.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xena Design + Marketing Firm</a>, has offices in Atlanta and Beverly Hills, California. The following has been edited for length and clarity.  </em></p><p>At a previous job, I was the only Black woman at an architectural firm with hundreds of designers. By the way things looked at the office, you'd think it was 1950.</p><p>It often felt like the other designers would stare at me, like they were examining my hair, my clothes, or the way I spoke. Many made comments about my expensive car. They wanted to know where I came from. I was asked dozens of times what an HBCU was — a historically Black college and university — and why don't we just quote integrate. I wanted them to leave me alone so I could simply do my work. </p><p>When big clients came to visit, higher-ups suddenly placed me out on display as a show of staff diversity. But once the guests left, they put me back into my cubicle. I felt like I was the Raggedy Ann doll of the office. I'd be pulled back out and put on display during the firm's holiday party as, once again, a showcase of the firm's so-called diversity.</p><h2><strong>I was tired of feeling like a prop for diversity</strong></h2><p>I felt management constantly gave me the most difficult architectural-design tasks. As one principal told me, he was testing me. I complained to HR, but didn't feel that they listened to me. </p><p>I asked a manager, a white woman, if we could host a job-shadowing day for my sorority's teenage mentees. She asked me if the girls had ever gone on a field trip before, and if they'd know how to act, because they may be coming to party. I have no clue why she believed high-school honor students hadn't been on a field trip since kindergarten. The job-shadow day never happened. It was just one of many racially charged microaggressions thrown my way. </p><p>If this was corporate America, I wanted out. </p><p>Several months before I quit, I launched a <a href="https://www.imdb.com/name/nm11053351/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">secret acting and voice-over career</a>, working on shows like "P-Valley" on Starz. When the day came several years ago, I used all the money I had saved up from my acting gig, cracked open my retirement fund, and left. </p><p>I started my own company, <a href="https://www.xenadesignfirm.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Xena Design + Marketing Firm</a>, and life is phenomenal right now. </p><p>Many of my clients tell me that other, traditional firms feel condescending, racist, and out of touch. Considering that I've worked in these environments, I get it. My firm provides a safe haven. We hold our interviews while eating ice cream in Downtown Atlanta or while riding the SkyView Atlanta Ferris wheel. My firm takes on fun projects from clients, such as The Atlanta Airport, Live Nation, BET, and some celebrities. It's incredibly exciting.</p><h2><strong>I launched my own firm, and here's my advice </strong></h2><p>Having a mentor is so important. And professional networks are going to become your best friend. I graduated from Project Reap through the Urban Land Institute. The program bridges the gap between talented minority professionals and commercial real-estate companies. The Urban Land Institute's Los Angeles branch paired me with an amazing mentor since I've relocated to Beverly Hills. I get brunch with my mentor, look up at the palm trees, and it all feels so surreal. She's there for any questions I may have — business or personal.</p><p>Mentors help you navigate so much. Professional organizations provide high-end networking that may lead to clients, and they provide continuing-education courses that can be more beneficial than earning a college degree.</p><p>If you're in a similar position as I was previously in corporate America, my advice is: dream big, determine your unique selling point, find a supportive dream team, and get out.</p>

Lawless said she thinks the campaign actually hurt her chances of landing a role in "Star Wars."</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/gina-carano-fired-from-the-mandalorian-over-social-media-comments-2021-2">Carano was fired from her role as Cara Dune</a> in "The Mandalorian," a part she played in both of the two seasons, after <a href="https://www.insider.com/gina-carano-fired-the-mandalorian-controversy-timeline-twitter-2021-2">a series of social media controversies</a> that included comparing the political divide in the US to Nazi Germany and <a href="https://www.insider.com/mandalorian-gina-carano-twitter-tweets-controversy-transphobic-2020-9">mocking transgender pronouns.</a></p><p>Fans then led a campaign arguing that Lawless, who starred in "Xena: Warrior Princess," should be cast as the new Cara Dune.</p><p>Lawless commented on this campaign in a recent interview with the British newspaper <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2021/09/27/lucy-lawless-on-fans-wanting-her-to-replace-gina-carano-in-mandalorian-15325091/">Metro.</a></p><p>"Well to be honest with you, I was already in discussions about something on - it wasn't 'The Mandalorian' - something Star Wars-affiliated," Lawless said. "[The fan campaign] might have hurt me in some way, because then [Lucasfilm] couldn't hire me because it would seem to be pandering to… I'm just guessing here, I don't know anything."</p><p>She continued: "But, in some ways, it can be unhelpful, because if they pander to this fan group, then how are you going to pander to every other fan group, do you know what I mean?"</p><div type="image" title="Cara Dune" height="1200" width="1600" msid="86680264" hostid="261"></div><p>Lawless went on to say that she felt her name "became political" as the idea of her fan casting only emerged from <a href="https://www.insider.com/gina-carano-fired-from-the-mandalorian-over-social-media-comments-2021-2">Carano's exit from "The Mandalorian,"</a> which was due to her controversial comments. However, Lawless is still grateful that the fans felt so enthusiastic about her potential casting to lead a campaign.</p><p>"But that's the way the world is and they meant it out of love, and I thank the fans for their fealty to me," Lawless said. "I haven't thought about that since, so it hasn't given me any pain, but that was my thought at the time, like, ooh, this makes me look like a political appointment, and not an actress."</p><p>It is unconfirmed what other project Lawless was discussing with Disney about starring in, but she does already have some "Star Wars" acting experience on her resume. She had a voice role in two episodes of "Star Wars Resistance," as the Queen of the Aeosians.</p><p>Meanwhile, the makers of "The Mandalorian" have since said that <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2021/02/lucasfilm-recast-gina-carano-cara-dune-mandalorian-1234617377/#:~:text=A%20Disney%20spokesperson%20confirms%20to,won't%20be%20the%20case.ase.">Cara Dune won't be recast</a>. Instead, the character will simply be phased out of the series altogether. The third season won't arrive on Disney+ until next year, but a spin-off from the show, <a href="https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/the-book-of-boba-fett-release-date-trailer-cast-plot/">"The Book of Boba Fett,"</a> will premiere at the end of this year.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The rate of young adults living with their parents is the highest it's been in decades.</li><li>They're also spending the money they would have spent on rent on pricey goods and travel. </li></ul><p>Flying the coop is increasingly expensive.  </p><p>The typical rent nationwide crossed $2,000 a month in May of 2022, according to the real-estate-data firm Redfin. Though rents have dropped slightly since then, a January report from the financial firm Moody's Analytics found most American renters are still classified as "rent-burdened," meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on rent.  </p><p>For some young people living through their twenties in today's housing market, it's not worth the headache.  </p><p>Young Americans are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-living-at-home-as-an-adult-2023-1">living at home at historic rates</a>. Nearly a quarter of adults aged 25 to 34 lived in a multigenerational family household in 2021, a jump from 9% in 1971, <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/07/20/young-adults-in-u-s-are-much-more-likely-than-50-years-ago-to-be-living-in-a-multigenerational-household/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Pew Research</a>.  </p><p>Though many may make enough to afford big-city rents, young Americans with full-time jobs are opting instead to move back in with Mom and Dad, which allows them to spend on luxurious items and experiences that otherwise would be out of reach. It's fueling a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-buying-driving-luxury-market-bain-study-2022-11">boom in luxury goods</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zillennial-lives-with-parents-spends-on-luxury-goods-2023-1?utm_campaign=sf-insider-home&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;fbclid=IwAR3-NjHUtdRQpD5yOV1YkZNnrEvtyToYIdFfrfpNzQD4zzOaSzpjB7XySM0">reshaping the future of retail</a>.   </p><p>Four people spoke to Insider about the tradeoffs they made to move back in with their families for greater financial flexibility. To be sure, some are still saving and investing in large amounts. But being back in their childhood bedrooms also gives them the freedom to splurge on designer handbags, meals at fancy restaurants, bottle service at nightclubs, cameras, and trips to Europe.</p><h2><strong>Anastasia Ricci, 25, Greenwich, Connecticut</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Anastasia Ricci on a boat off the coast of Miami on a weekend trip that cost $1,200." height="1080" width="1440" msid="97606675" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Profession</strong>: Public-relations associate account executive</p><p><strong>If she weren't living with her parents she'd live in</strong>: Stamford, Connecticut, where the rent starts at $1,875 a month, <a href="https://www.rent.com/connecticut/stamford-apartments/rent-trends" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Rent.com</a>. </p><p><strong>She's spent money on</strong>: $5,500 on a Chanel handbag; $1,700 on a Balmain jacket; $1,200 on a weekend in Miami; $200 on an Alex and Olivia dress; $35,000 on a Kia GT Line; $450 on Louboutin shoes</p><p>The pandemic stopped Ricci from moving out of her parents' house in Greenwich, Connecticut. </p><p>In March 2020, weeks after she got her first job at a New York City-based PR company, the whole world shut down. </p><p>"It was nice to be home with people then," she said. But she is buying what she sees as investments in her wardrobe and life, something she never would have been able to do if she was tossing thousands toward rent each month. </p><p>One of her priciest investments? A $5,500 Chanel handbag. </p><p>"I'll have it for the rest of my life. I am taking super good care of it and my daughter will have it in the future," she said. "That's the way I've been looking at it — I don't want to skimp out on life if I don't have to." </p><h2><strong>Julia Machaj, 23, Rocky Hill, Connecticut</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Julia Machaj at a work event." height="2268" width="3023" msid="97606679" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Profession:</strong> Engineer</p><p><strong>If she weren't living with her parents she'd live in:</strong> Stamford, Connecticut, where the rent starts at $1,875 a month, <a href="https://www.rent.com/connecticut/stamford-apartments/rent-trends" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Rent.com</a>. </p><p><strong>She's spent money on</strong>: $20,000 on a 2021 Subaru; $80 and more on American Eagle jeans; $150 on a pair of Xena work boots; $300 on art supplies; $325 on a membership to a recreational-sports league; $30,000 set aside in the bank for a future down payment on a house and quality house furnishings </p><p>Machaj, who graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2021 with a degree in engineering, got a job right away as a product-support engineer at an aerospace company. </p><div type="image" title="Machaj, her brother, and her sister — they're triplets — at their college graduation." height="533" width="710" msid="97606681" hostid="261"></div><p>As she was getting adjusted to adult life at the job in West Hartford, Connecticut, she thought it would make the most sense to live with her parents in Rocky Hill, 28 minutes away. </p><p>Now, she's been there long enough to see how much money she can save — and plans to stay for a few more years. </p><p>In the meantime, she's making investments in clothing like American Eagle jeans and in hobbies like art and sports. </p><p>"I've been trying to invest in a more professional wardrobe for work, which is difficult right out of college," she said. "Having more money has helped me get to that point. It helps me kind of feel more professional and comfortable in my day-to-day work." </p><p>Even with those purchases she's saved $30,000, something she said she would never be able to do if she was renting in a city like nearby Stamford.</p><h2><strong>Jonathan Branch, 30, Fairfax, Virginia </strong></h2><div type="image" title="Jonathan Branch funds his passion for photography with the money he saves from not paying rent." height="771" width="1029" msid="97606683" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Profession:</strong> Accountant </p><p><strong>If he wasn't living with his parents he'd live in:</strong> Arlington, Virginia, where rent starts at $1,999 a month, <a href="https://www.rent.com/virginia/arlington-apartments/rent-trends" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Rent.com</a>.</p><p><strong>He's spent money on:</strong> $700 Sony camera and $800 lenses </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Branch recently turned 30, but spent his twenties living at home in Fairfax, Virginia. After graduating college, Branch took an accounting job in McLean, Virginia, a 15-minute drive from his childhood home. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Branch decided to live with his parents rather than move into nearby Arlington, Virginia, or Washington, DC. It's a choice that's supported his savings as well as his newfound passion for photography. "For me, this is a very creative pursuit."</p><div type="image" title="Branch at a recent shoot he conducted in his home." height="595" width="796" msid="97606687" hostid="261"></div><p>Living at home seems to be working well — his younger brother moved back home after college, too. </p><h2><strong>Gabby Beckford, 27, Tacoma, Washington</strong></h2><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Gabby Beckford worked remotely while traveling in Bergamo, Italy." height="573" width="764" msid="97606689" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Profession:</strong> Travel influencer </p><p><strong>If she weren't living with her parents she'd live in:</strong> Seattle, Washington, where rent starts at $1,560 a month, <a href="https://www.rent.com/washington/seattle-apartments/rent-trends" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Rent.com</a>.</p><p><strong>She's spent money on:</strong> Flights and accommodations including $1,500 on a Mexico trip; $1,000 on a Croatia trip; $1,800 on a trip to the United Arab Emirates; and $1,400 on a trip to Greece</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">In February 2020, Beckford was living in her studio apartment, which cost $1,600 a month, in the Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore when she decided she needed a change. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of spending her paycheck as an engineer to scrape by, she wanted the flexibility to drop everything and travel the world. So, she quit her job and resolved to move back in with her mom in Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">With her childhood bedroom as a "hub," Beckford was able to become a full-time travel influencer, thanks in part to a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/packslight/?hl=en">travel Instagram account</a> she started when she studied abroad in Dubai. The account now has 158,000 followers.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Now, she jets off to Mexico, Croatia, Italy, and Greece, but still returns home in the States to live with her mom, who has since relocated to Tacoma, Washington. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;"><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="Beckford with her mom and grandmother in Seattle." height="1306" width="1737" msid="97606690" hostid="261"></div><p style="font-weight: 400;">Beckford said she saves money on housing when she travels compared to her previous lease. She finds short-term rentals through Facebook groups, eschewing sites like Airbnb and Booking.com. Most recently, she rented a quiet one-bedroom accommodation in Mexico City for $800 a month with abundant natural light and steady WiFi.</p><p style="font-weight: 400;">Without an expensive lease hanging overhead, Beckford said she's also more likely to indulge by trying new restaurants or treating herself to a manicure when she's abroad. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Stress- and mental-health-wise, it's a lot easier to not have that big bill at the end of the month," she told Insider. </p>

<p><div type="image" title="mulan" height="649" width="865" msid="76631671" hostid="261"></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Although <keyword id="3026859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mulan">Mulan</keyword> is the only <keyword id="46161" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Disney">Disney</keyword> Princess of East Asian descent, the original Mulan cartoon was a massive flop in <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>.</li><li>Disney pulled out all the stops to make the movie a hit and even had <keyword id="20885" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jackie-Chan">Jackie Chan</keyword> perform "I'll Make a Man Out of You."</li><li>However, while government restrictions and Disney's history of releasing films not aligned with Chinese politics didn't help, one of the main reasons "Mulan" bombed at the box office was because <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/299618.stm">audiences thought Mulan was too "foreign-looking."</a></li><li>The worldwide release of 2020's live-action remake of "Mulan" was postponed until July 24 due to the coronavirus, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/boycott-mulan-trends-disney-actress-liu-yifei-hong-kong-police-2019-8">the film has already been met with controversy.</a></li></ul><p>Since the film was first released in 1998, the character of Mulan has held a soft spot in many young girls' hearts as the most badass and fearless Disney Princess of them all, despite technically not being a princess at all.</p><p>Taking her father's place in the army to fight the war against the Huns, Mulan proved to herself and to the world that a girl can not only fight, but also save the entirety of China — and also get the man in the end.</p><p>One of only a handful of POC (princesses of color) – with Jasmine and Pocahontas preceding her, and Tiana and Moana to come in the new Millennium – "Mulan" was a massive global hit for Disney, <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/inside-disneys-bold-200m-gamble-mulan-stakes-couldnt-be-higher-1280999">grossing more than $300 million worldwide ($475 million today)</a>, and resonating with audiences worldwide.</p><p>As Disney's first major character of Chinese descent, the company was eager for the film to be successful in China, hoping that it would prove to be at least as popular in the country as "The Lion King" was.</p><p>Therefore, Disney pulled out all the stops to make the film appeal to the Chinese audiences, even calling in Jackie Chan (who was as popular in America for his English language roles as he was in his home country) to perform the Mandarin and Cantonese versions of "I'll Make a Man Out of You."</p><p>Despite Disney's best efforts, though, "Mulan" ended up being a massive box office flop in the Chinese market.</p><p>After only a three-week run in the Hunan province, "Mulan" took in just <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/299618.stm">$30,000 at the box office,</a> and in Shanghai, only 200,000 of the city's 14 million population went to see the film.</p><h2>Why did one of Disney's biggest global hits bomb in China?</h2><p>While "Mulan" is only loosely based on the mythical tale of Hua Mulan, China's official Xinhua news agency said she was too "foreign-looking" in her Disney incarnation and "her complexion, disposition, and manner of behaviour were different from an [authentic] Chinese character," the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/299618.stm">BBC reported in 1999.</a></p><p>The people of China are all too familiar with Mulan's exploits, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/article/275997/mulan-sinks-box-office-heroine-fails-charm-patrons">reported the South China Morning Post,</a> and some thought Disney's version had more in common with "Xena: Warrior Princess" than their beloved ancient heroine.</p><p>Filmgoers occasionally refer to the cinematic heroine as "Yang Mulan," or "Foreign Mulan," <a href="https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1999-05-03-9905030250-story.html">The Baltimore Sun reported</a>, and complained she looked either Korean or Western and did not "exhibit the same depth of filial piety as her literary predecessor."</p><p>Some Beijingers, The Baltimore Sun also reported, found the Disney version of Mulan "too self-aggrandizing," which is a big no-no under China's Confucian culture, which values modesty and community.</p><p>This animated Mulan didn't go to war just to prevent her elderly father from risking his life; instead, she had her own selfish motivations of wanting to escape from a patriarchal society and an overbearing family.</p><p>Audiences also didn't appreciate the inclusion of a sardonic talking dragon in the tale, and if Disney had been accurate in their version of the story, we wouldn't have had Eddie Murphy playing Mushu.</p><p>"This is not a Chinese dragon," one audience member told The Baltimore Sun at the time.</p><p>"I can tell the people who designed the dragon are from America," she added.</p><p>But while the heroine's foreign looks and the modern retelling of the ancient legend played a role, they were not the only reason "Mulan" flopped so hard in China.</p><h2>Chinese movie theaters were very different places 20 years ago</h2><p>While nowadays China is a massive market for international cinema with its population of 1.3 billion, back in 1998, when "Mulan" first came out, only 10 foreign films were allowed to enter its markets each year, and the chances of these films being accepted was very low.</p><p>Only 18 months prior, Disney and China were close to an <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1997-oct-31-mn-48645-story.html">international incident over Martin Scorsese's "Kundun</a>," Disney's previous release in the country, a biopic on the Dalai Lama and China's occupation of Tibet, which China saw as politically provocative.</p><p>As China <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20110705114829/http:/www.tibet.ca/en/newsroom/wtn/archive/old?y=1998&amp;m=7&amp;p=12_2p;p=12_2">threatened to rein in Disney's business dealings in the country</a>, Disney, in turn, hoped "Mulan" would be the film to soothe their soured relationship.</p><p><div type="image" title="mulan 2020" height="1714" width="2286" msid="76631677" hostid="261"></div></p><p>"Mulan" started off on the unfavorable side of the Beijing's censors who had to rule over its release, and after holding it hostage for eight months, not allowing it to come out at the same time as the rest of the world (and giving way for plenty of pirated copies to circulate first), when China finally decided to release it, it wasn't granted the best treatment, either.</p><p>The film hit cinemas on a limited release on February 23 1999, the day after the end of Chinese New Year celebrations when schools reopened and kids headed back to school, to ensure that local films dominated the more lucrative holiday market.</p><p>All this was enough to sabotage the film already, but the audience's response to the character of Mulan gave the film the final blow and sent it right to its box office grave.</p><p>The worldwide release for "Mulan's" live-action remake, which was scheduled for March 27 2020, has been <a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-postpones-mulan-new-mutants-antlers-coronavirus-2020-3">postponed to July 24</a> due to the coronavirus pandemic. Disney's classic 'Mulan' flopped in China because audiences didn't think the heroine looked Chinese enough

<p>Jennifer Sky <a href="http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/09/working-as-a-teenage-model-gave-me-ptsd.html">tells The Cut</a> that she was scouted by modeling agents and moved to New York when she was 16. </p>
<p>The experience was traumatizing, according to Sky. She writes: </p>

It became hard for me to travel new routes, to eat at new restaurants, or even shop at the corner store. I became so timid I no longer spoke. I eventually did not leave my room unless I had a job or a casting.</span></p>

<p>"Batman V Superman" director Zack Snyder surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday morning to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/san-diego-comic-con-batman-v-superman-teaser-2014-7">reveal the first teaser trailer for the film</a> and a first look at Wonder Woman.</p>
<p>Gal Gadot ("Fast and Furious" franchise) will play the Amazonian princess Diana Prince in the followup to "Man of Steel."</p>
<p>Cast members Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Gadot briefly joined Snyder on stage before revealing character posters for all three. </p>

<p>The outfit is noticeably darker than previous incarnations of the heroine. Gadot's version is pictured with a sword and Wonder Woman's lasso of truth to the side of her right thigh.</p>

Here's How Wonder Woman Will Look In 'Batman V Superman'
