Men using online dating apps in India outnumber women on the platform by nearly three times, according to a recent survey. Only 26% of dating app users are women against 74% men,<a href="https://qz.com/india/1484691/woo-tinder-trulymadly-have-a-massive-gender-problem-in-india/"> Quartz reported</a> citing a survey by Woo — an online dating app. ‘Not here to date or for hookups’ While online dating apps in the west are frequently used both for casual dating, long-term dating and, increasingly, hookups, Indian users reportedly have a totally different set of goals for signing up on these platforms. The report, which surveyed 20,000 in India, revealed that 38% of the people in India use the app to look for “meaningful relationships.” Whereas, for 28% it is also a way to socialise and meet new people after moving to another city. About 17% of the surveyed respondent said that they joined dating apps to expand their social circles. Who spends more time: Men or Women? Men tend to chat with multiple women simultaneously and hence they usually end up spending more time on the app in comparison to women who converse with two to three men at a time, reported Quartz citing the survey. Interestingly, men on these online platforms have complained about fewer female users. However, women are bothered by the huge amount of attention they get because there are too many men against fewer women. Dating apps working for ‘change’ Bumble — which has already marked its presence in 140 countries with 40 million users -- has recently launched in India with a purpose to change the dating game for women. <keyword id="1738241" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tinder">Tinder</keyword>, another dating app, has been tryin hard to grab a bigger piece of the Indian market by making ‘traditional’ ads and introducing ‘My Move’ feature — much similar to Bumble which is famous for letting women start the conversation on online dating apps.

India’s dating apps have way more men than women, says study

Reiterating his determination to reform the business environment in the country, he stressed on the government’s reform agenda. 
 "The Prime Minister spoke very candidly. He outlined his vision for India. He said any bottlenecks which should not be there will not be there," MEA spokesperson <keyword id="32893" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikas-swarup">Vikas Swarup</keyword> said. 
 
Hearing out the CEO’s concerns and suggestions at the round table, he asked them to give him a detailed note on all the points and concerns raised by them to examine in detail and respond. 
 
"Prime Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Modi">Modi</a> appreciated the fact that they had aired these issues and he was very committed to working to resolve them," he added. 
 
He further noted that the roundtable gave the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Modi">Indian Prime Minister</a> a good opportunity to hear out their experiences directly from them. The CEOs too appreciated the fact that the NaMo government is taking steps to improve the businesss climate of the country.

PM Modi bats for India, woos the US investors!

New Delhi, Nov 19 () Music streaming service Spotify on Tuesday announced its first three original podcasts for India as the platform looks to bring in more local content to woo listeners in the country.
 Spotify, which launched its services in India earlier this year, competes with players like JioSaavn, Amazon Music, Gaana and Xiaomi-backed Hungama in the country where consumption of digital content is on the rise.
 The Swedish firm is bringing in cricket-centric '22 Yarns with Gaurav Kapur', fiction thriller 'Bhaskar Bose' narrated by Mantra, and love and relationship advice-based 'Love Aaj Kal' by Aastha and Ankit, a statement said.
 These podcasts will go live on Spotify on December 3, it added.
 The announcement comes as a reiteration to Spotify's global audio-first strategy that focuses on the brand's potential to grow faster with more original podcasts.
 The launch of these new series also opens the opportunity for India's growing creator community to work with the company for creating and delivering content in engaging audio formats.
 "Storytelling is intrinsic to India, and almost nostalgic because most of us have grown on stories that our grandparents and parents told us; Spotify wants to re-establish that listening culture here, especially as users seek more screen-free moments," Spotify Managing Director (India) Amarjit Singh Batra said.
 Currently, Spotify has over 5 lakh podcast titles on the platform, up from 10,000 in 2018.
 Globally, Spotify has invested in new original podcasts in the US, Europe, and South America. In June, former US president Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground, announced a partnership with Spotify to produce podcasts exclusive to the platform.
 The acquisitions of podcast networks Gimlet and Parcast, and creator platform Anchor have also enabled the company to invest in high-quality content as well as providing an easy way for creators to record a podcast, respectively.
 Spotify has also seen exponential growth in the podcast hours streamed globally (up about 39 per cent from the second quarter of 2019 to the third quarter) with podcast adoption reaching almost 14 per cent of total monthly active users (MAUs).
 While the US accounts for the largest share of podcast streams, a majority of the growth and listening is now coming from outside the US, Spotify said.
 "Just a little over one year ago, we announced Spotify for Podcasters, which provides listener insights to all creators who have podcasts on our platform. Today, we have 1,40,000 registered creators across the world, on the platform, and the data for a few of these creators shows that India features in their top streamed markets. Much of this content is lifestyle, educational, and news," Batra said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A woman who claimed she embodied an Indian goddess has been accused of abusing her devotees.</li><li>Woo May Hoe, 52, was handed 50 charges by Singaporean prosecutors on Thursday.</li></ul>Singaporean prosecutors have slapped a 52-year-old woman who claimed to be the incarnation of an Indian goddess with 50 charges, including forcing devotees to consume human feces. According to <a href="https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/goddess-eat-human-faeces-punishment-50-charges-2015506">Today Online</a>, Woo May Hoe was slapped with 40 additional charges in court on Thursday, including cheating and causing grievous hurt. She was initially hit with <a href="https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/woman-court-allegedly-pretending-be-goddess-forcing-devotees-eat-human-faeces?cid=internal_inarticlelinks_web_11102022_tdy">10 charges in October 2020.</a>Woo, who has been held in remand since October 2020, is accused of preying on 14 people over eight years from 2012 to May 2020. Per Today Online, prosecutors have accused her of various offenses, including forcing five devotees to eat human feces as punishment.According to court documents seen by Today Online, Woo has also been accused of physically abusing a 43-year-old woman by allegedly stabbing the woman's forearm with a pair of scissors and using pliers to pull out one of the woman's teeth.Per the outlet, Woo also allegedly defrauded several people of millions of dollars by conning them into giving her money to purchase cows, claiming that the donations would help improve her victims' medical ailments.One of Woo's victims was a woman who gave her 350,000 Singapore dollars, or about $280,000, in 2012 to supposedly buy the animals, Today Online reported. Prosecutors said the woman also gave Woo around $1.7 million between 2013 and 2015 after Woo convinced her that the money was going into building a temple in India. Woo's case bears similarities to one involving <a href="https://www.insider.com/police-arrest-holy-man-followers-eat-feces-drink-urine-2022-5">a self-professed "holy man" in Thailand</a> who was arrested in May. Local media outlets reported that the 75-year-old cult leader had led a group whose members drank his urine and ate his feces. Police also said that they found around 11 corpses at his jungle campsite.

New Delhi, Mar 4 () ByteDance, which runs short-video platform TikTok, has launched a new music streaming service 'Resso' to take on competitors like Gaana, JioSaavn and Spotify in the Indian market. Resso, which calls itself the world's first social music streaming app, is also looking at expanding its service to Indonesia in the the next few months. "India is the first market where we are rolling out. The app is targeted at 18-24 year olds. It includes many exclusive and easy-to-use social features that will enable these Gen Z users to instantly connect with a larger community," Resso India Head of Music Content and Partnership Hari Nair told . He added that the company is working on expanding to Indonesia over the next few months. For accessing features like downloadable content, unlimited skips and high-quality audio, users will need to upgrade to a monthly premium subscription of Rs 99 for Android and Rs 119 for iOS. The basic app is free for users. Nair said the company's initial focus is on getting more users onboard but declined to comment on specific numbers. Noting that the company has partnered with local and international players, Nair said Resso has also inked deals with labels like Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Merlin and Beggars Group, T-Series, Saregama, Zee Music, YRF Music, Lahiri Music, Divo and Muzik 247, among others. Resso, which allows users to generate content for the 'Vibes' feature, has set up a content moderation team to ensure that that inappropriate content is put up. The app has a scroll format (similar to TikTok) and allows users to discover music content as soon as they open the app. "Gen Z and millennials are at the core of our offering and both music and social networking are central to their daily lives. The relationship between music and the listener is currently passive but with Vibes, comments and other features, Resso aims to transform this through a new and compelling music streaming experience," Nair said. With increasing availability of affordable smartphones and cheap data plans, India is the largest mobile data consumer market globally -- an opportunity that global tech companies are vying to tap into. The US-based <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> has started testing longer subscription plans in the country, as it looks to woo new users in India where online video consumption has seen a massive growth in the past few years. According to sources, Netflix has started testing multiple months subscription plans (three, six and 12 months) that will be offered at a discounted price. However, this will be available only to some new users, and they may see different options, they added.
 The sources said the intent of the pilot is to see whether subscribers will be open to paying for several months, or a year in advance.
 Earlier this year, Netflix had piloted and then launched a mobile phone-only plan in the Indian market -- a first for the company globally. The new long-term plans being piloted are also India-first.
 When contacted, a Netflix spokesperson said, "We believe that our members may value the flexibility that comes from being able to pay for a few months at once. As always, this is a test and we will only introduce it more broadly if people find it useful."
 Currently, Netflix only offers monthly subscription plans across three price slabs of Rs 499, Rs 649 and Rs 799, respectively, apart from the Rs 199 mobile-only pack.
 Its competitors like Amazon Prime Videos, <keyword id="2739840" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hotstar">Hotstar</keyword> and ZEE5 already offer annual subscription packs (Rs 999) which is cheaper than their monthly plans (ranges between Rs 99-299). A premium player Netflix started its operations in India in 2016 and has introduced a number of Indian shows on its platform.
 Last week, Netflix founder and Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings had said the company was focussed on creating original Indian content for audiences not just in India but also globally.
 "This year and next year, we spend about Rs 3,000 crore developing content and you will start to see a lot of stuff hit the screens. We got about 100 employees in Mumbai and a couple of thousand working on different productions. So, we are trying to become more Indian in content offering," Hastings had said.
 Globally, the company has over 158 million users. It does not provide country-specific numbers.
 There is a growing trend of consuming on-demand content services on television, a significant number of people watch content on smartphones. According to a FICCI-EY 2019 report, Indians spend 30 per cent of their phone time and over 70 per cent of their mobile data on entertainment.
 Online content consumption in India has seen massive growth with data plans becoming more affordable. Data rates in India are among the cheapest globally.

Netflix tests multi-month packs in India to woo new users

New Delhi, Dec 19 () Smartphone maker Oppo on Thursday said it will allocate USD 143 million in 2020 for supporting developers across the globe to boost its operating ecosystem.
 The company at OPPO Developer Conference (ODC) in Beijing announced "developer support programme Gravity Plan 2.0, for which OPPO will allocate RMB 1 billion (about USD 143 million) in 2020" which will majorly focus on Asian markets including India, the company said in a statement.
 The company also announced a USD 7 billion investment in research and development over the next three years to develop core technologies in hardware, software and system in addition to 5G, artificial intelligence, augmented reality etc.
 "Oppo understands India as their key market and aims to reach out to the large talent pool of innovators, developers and partners," the company said.
 The development comes a day after Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei and its sub-brand Honor approached developers in India to boost its own mobile application suite Huawei Mobile Services on the lines of Google Mobile Service.
 Oppo claimed to have made remarkable progress in building a new ecosystem, boasting more than 320 million monthly active users globally on its ColorOS operating system (built on top of Android OS) and accumulating a massive number of users across its applications, services, and content ecosystem.
 The company said that more than 120,000 developers have already joined the OPPO's platform till date.
 "With the help of ColorOS, which is available in more than 140 countries and regions around the world, the 'Gravity Plan 2.0' will build on last year's plan to provide sustained and all-round support to partners in the four major fields of applications, services, content and going global," Henry Duan, Vice President, Internet Services, Oppo said.
 The Chinese smartphone maker also announced USD 7 billion investment in R&amp;D.
 "Oppo plans to invest RMB 50 billion (USD 7 billion) into R&amp;D spending in the next three years to develop core technologies in hardware, software and system in addition to 5G, AI, AR, big data and other frontier technologies," the statement said. PRS MR

It seems to have a similar plan for Mumbai too. “In addition to ecommerce and the Navi store, IKEA will also open smaller city center stores. Ikea calls these smaller stores ‘touch points’ for the customer to get an experience before making the purchase. “Currently the decision is to open two city center stores in different parts of Mumbai. The race is hotting up While both Pepperfry and Urban Ladder may have a headstart, they are going up against a giant in Ikea. The two startups put together have received investments worth less than $300 million in the last six years. On the other hand, “Ikea has committed to invest 1.5 billion euros ($1.68 billion) so far. Three Indian cities are in the fast speed expansion markets namely Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi/NCR. Our focus on India will only increase in the future,” according to Betzel. Even Flipkart, India’s largest online retailer, now owned by Walmart, is looking to set up experience centres. Ikea in Mumbai: The Swedish retailer is wooing online shoppers in India's financial capital

The single engine Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) got wings at Defexpo-2020 on Friday after Chairman Defence Research and Development Organisation's initial operational clearance to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for its production. HAL CMD R. Madhavan received the initial operational clearance certification from G. Sateesh Reddy, Chairman, DRDO, at the 'Bandhan' programme held at the ongoing <keyword id="8154465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="DefExpo-2020">DefExpo 2020</keyword> in the presence of Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and others. The move will help armed forces to replace the ageing fleet of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. HAL will be manufacturing indigenously designed and developed helicopters that will meet the operational requirements of armed forces. "This is a momentous occasion for HAL. It reinforces our commitment towards indigenous R&amp;D programmes on self-reliance and enhancing operational effectiveness of the Indian armed forces. HAL is fully geared to fulfil the requirements of its customers in a time-bound manner," said R Madhavan. Arup Chatterjee, Director, Engineering &amp; R&amp;D, HAL, said the performance of basic configuration of LUH in all terrains and under all weather conditions is satisfactory and that HAL is moving towards the next phase. <ul><li><keyword id="3360525" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba-Cloud">Alibaba Cloud</keyword> is looking to expand its market in India and one-up its competitors.</li><li>It’s looking to do it in the most Chinese way possible, keeping its product flexible and cheap.</li><li>Although Alibaba Cloud in the process of wooing a few digital companies away from Amazon Web Services (AWS) — it’s now looking to get bigger companies on board.</li></ul>Alibaba Cloud is looking to expand its market in India. In a lot of ways, the company’s <keyword id="140601" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="database">database</keyword> management solutions aren’t all that different — but is already wooing away new-age digital companies like Zomato, <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> from Amazon Web Services (AWS). Now, it is now looking to get bigger companies on board. The selling point for Alibaba Vice President Feifei Li is not very different from any other Chinese business ⁠— flexible and cheap. "Both (AWS Aurora and Polar DB) use shared storage architecture, which can serve up to 100 TB (terabytes) of data — but if you want to scale beyond that, like during a massive e-commerce operation, they need scalability beyond what shared storage can offer," Li told Business Insider. And, according to him, it costs a tenth of the AWS’ cloud services. But AWS doesn't agree. "It is inaccurate to say that PolarDB is available at a tenth of the cost as Amazon Aurora. If you consider a top of the line instance size, Amazon Aurora is still cheaper than PolarDB with more VCPUs (6 more VCPUs) on offer, and a secure virtualization platform (R5 instances powered by the AWS Nitro System)," the company told Business Insider. It also pointed out that even though Zomato, Paytm and BigBasket are on Alibaba Cloud, they're also using AWS simultaneously for other services. Li is in India to sell Polar DB, Alibaba Cloud’s relational database — a database in which a lot of different data sets can be compared and re-assembled without having to reorganise storage. Amazon’s customers, Alibaba-backed companies Currently, most of the company’s clients are small and medium enterprises (SMEs) — but most of the revenue comes from large companies. "We already have quite a few large businesses like <keyword id="96306" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Entertainment">Reliance Entertainment</keyword> and helped them launch across 150 countries," said Alex Li, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud South Asia. So, Alibaba Cloud’s real test will be when it tries to woo its next set of clients. Li says the PolarDB is available at a tenth of the cost as AWS Aurora.</li><li>It’s tried and tested. "Not only do we have cloud database as a service, but we also provide database infrastructure for the entire Alibaba Group. That really helps us strengthen our technology and mature our product before we offer it to our customers," he explained.</li><li>It is fully compatible with MySQL. This is <a href="https://www.gartner.com/en/documents/3947472/magic-quadrant-for-cloud-infrastructure-as-a-service-wor">an important capability </a>since more businesses are already integrated with one type of database or another. Compatibility ensures that they can easily transfer their data and processes from one platform to the next. </li><li>Security. "We have some unique strengths, that Microsoft, Google and AWS don’t have. For example, we have a product called AllEncrypted. It combines database kernels with security software like Intel SGX. It allows the customer to encrypt their data using a private, secret key — and they don’t have to share that key with us," said Li.</li><li>Keep tabs on data. In the near future, blockchain technology will be integrated, which will allow authentication of the data through database logs.</li></ol>Alibaba Cloud is focusing all of its energies on India, and for good reason. 	“This alliance is first of its kind in the two-wheeler industry - both for Honda and PNB. Propelled by this partnership with Punjab National Bank, we aim to grow Honda's retail finance significantly in coming months,” said Y S Guleria, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, HMSI. 
	Through this strategic alliance, company aims to tap its target audience in rural areas. “With 40% of branches of PNB in rural areas and additional 24% in semi-urban areas, Honda's strategic alliance with Punjab National Bank will help it make deeper inroads into hinterland”, the company said in a statement. 
	 
	By availing this offer, customers can save up to Rs 10,000 by getting loan finance for 90% of the value of the product at a lower rate of interest of 12.25%. The auto maker claims that the interest rate is the lowest in the industry. 
	 
	Commenting on the partnership, S S Bhatia, General Manager, Retail Assets Division, Punjab National Bank said that the bank has offered two retail finance schemes through this alliance. “Our Bank has 80 specialized retail asset branches at prime locations for financing only retail loans. Honda is synonymous globally with high quality products at reasonable prices…Through customized and convenient finance options, we look forward to partnering Honda in fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of millions in India,” added Bhatia. 
	 
	Reports suggest that HMSI is expecting to clock in a sale of 4.5 million scooters and motorcycles in the current fiscal year, posting a growth of 22% against 3.7 million units sold in the last fiscal year.
