Now, after Mistry’s demise has sent shockwaves across the country, Gadkari said that even chief ministers don’t follow safety rules. Some ministers even use a clip so that the alarm does not make any sound, said Gadkari, when there is no belt. After the incident, Gadkari also said that the ministry is now working towards making six airbags compulsory in all cars. It was not too long ago, just in February 2022 that the Indian <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/auto/cars/govt-makes-three-point-seat-belts-mandatory-for-all-front-facing-passengers-in-car/articleshow/89501540.cms">government </a>had also made it mandatory for automakers to provide three-point seat belts for all front-facing passengers in a car, which is also applicable for the middle seat in the rear row of a car. It is also stated in the rules Motor Vehicles Act 138(3) that fastening seat belts is compulsory for passengers sitting in the front as well as the rear seats. However, India fails to follow the law of its land. As per a 2019 report by SaveLIFE Foundation, less than 1% of people in India use rear seat belts. 37.8% of all the people surveyed didn’t even know that any such legal compulsion existed. While 23.9% of people didn’t even know that rear seat belts existed. The centre has also made it compulsory for all cars to have six airbags across from October 1. After losing his ‘good friend,’ minister Gadkari said that all cars exported out of India have 6 airbags and asked then why Indian cars have only four airbags. What India can learn from other countries In 1997, Sweden adopted a ‘Vision Zero’ policy based on the idea that “no loss of life was acceptable.” The policy did not focus on changing human behaviour, the emphasis was on designing a better system of roads and other infrastructure, vehicle technology and enforcement. On the other hand, Singapore uses advanced warning lights that alert drivers about the upcoming signal and vehicle speed. <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/peterlyon/2020/08/27/frightening-consequences-for-drink-drivers-in-japan/">Japan </a>also has a strict policy for drunken drivers. It has a zero percent blood-alcohol level standard for drivers and individuals caught driving under the influence can face imprisonment for up to 15 years. In Switzerland, passengers travelling in the same car as a drunk driver are also considered liable and can lose their own licenses. Apart from strictly enforcing speed limits and other road regulations, Norway has found a unique approach to reduce its fatalities. It has made it mandatory for drivers to always have their headlights on while driving. Safety measures taken by automakers From installing airbags and adding stringent seatbelt alarms to running awareness campaigns, automakers have been trying to up safety for India’s car passengers. Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors offer six airbags across some models. Luxury car companies like Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo are also offering six airbags and the number increases on the higher-end models. Safety rules you must follow To stay safe, one must <a href="https://highwaypolice.maharashtra.gov.in/en/road-safety-guideline/#:~:text=Always%20obey%20Road%20safety%20rules,as%20markets%20and%20residential%20areas.">obey </a><keyword id="1501776" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety-rules" source="Orion">road safety rules</keyword> and regulations of India. <ul><li>Look for the traffic signs before you cross signals. </li><li>Drive within the speed limits prescribed. Ideally one should drive at approximately not more than 30 kmph near busy places such as markets and residential areas.</li><li>Keep vehicle oiled and serviced. A sudden breakdown of the vehicle on the road can cause hardships not only to you but also to fellow drivers and traffic personnel. </li><li>Stop or slow down your vehicle and allow the pedestrians to crossroads at unmanned/signalled Zebra crossings.</li><li>Always wear seat belts while driving four-wheelers.</li><li>Avoid rash or negligent driving.</li><li>Do not drink and drive.</li><li>Avoid using mobile phones while driving. New Delhi, May 15 () Retirement fund body EPFO has decided not to impose any penalty for delay in payment of employees' provident fund contributions by firms during the natiowide lockdown. Since the imposition of lockdown on March 25 by the government to contain the COVID-19 spread, businesses have been facing liquidity or cash crunch, leading to difficulties in paying their mandatory provident fund dues. "During the lockdown period we are not going to impose any damages (penalty). This is our pro stakeholder/businesses/employers attitude which we are following," Employees' Provident Fund Organisations (EPFO) Central Provident Fund Commissioner Sunil Barthwal said during a webinar organised by industry body PHDCCI on Friday. The EPFO has a provision of charging damages or penalty from the employers who are unable to deposit PF contributions as mandated under the EPF Scheme 1952. Employers are required to deposit dues on a month's salary by 15th of the next month. However, they get 10 days grace for payment after that. Earlier on April 30, the EPFO allowed employers to file monthly EPF returns without making simultaneous payment of dues, which gave a relief to about 6 lakh firms amid the lockdown. Under the scheme, employers are required to file employees provident fund returns and make payment of dues simultaneously. EPF returns have details about employees' and employers' contributions towards the social security scheme run by the EPFO. During the ongoing coronavirus-induced lockdown, businesses are not able to function normally and are facing liquidity issues or cash crunch to pay their statutory dues even though they are retaining the employees on their rolls, labour ministry had said in a statement on the decision. Barthwal also told the industry representatives during the webinar that the government's decision to cut employers and employees' PF contributions to 10 per cent each from the existing 12 per cent would be implemented in May month's salaries. "Soon notification is going to be out...May month salaries would be due in June. So we will apply it on the May month salaries," he said. Earlier this week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced reduction of statutory provident fund contribution by both employers and employees to 10 per cent of basic wages from the existing 12 per cent for the next three months. The decision was taken to facilitate more take-home salary for employees and give relief to employers in payment of PF dues, resulting in a liquidity ease of Rs 6,750 crore. The decision is expected to benefit 4.3 crore employees and 6.5 lakh employers reeling under liquidity crunch due to COVID-19 lockdown. Without divulging details about type of claims and time period, Barthwal said as many as 23 lakh claims were settled with disbursal of Rs 8,000 crore. Earlier on March 28, the EPFO had allowed formal sector workers under its ambit to withdraw a non-refundable advance from their retirement savings to deal with hardships due to lockdown. Under this provision, non-refundable withdrawal to the extent of the basic wages and dearness allowances for three months or up to 75 per cent of the amount standing to member's credit in the EPF account, whichever is less, is provided. The labour ministry has allowed over 6 crore subscribes of retirement fund body EPFO to withdraw an amount not exceeding their three months basic pay and dearness allowance from their EPF account in view of the lockdown to fight COVID-19.The ministry has issued a notification in this regard on March 28, 2020 to amend the Employees' Provident Fund Scheme 1952, a labour ministry statement said. The decision is taken in view of lockdown across the country to fight COVID-19. The notification permitted non-refundable withdrawal not exceeding the basic wages and dearness allowance for three months or up to 75 per cent of the amount standing to the credit of their EPF account, which ever is less, the ministry said. The COVID-19 has been declared pandemic and therefore employees working in establishments and factories across entire India, who are members of the EPF Scheme, 1952 are eligible for the benefits of non-refundable advance. A sub-para (3) under para 68L has been inserted in the EPF scheme, 1952. The amended Employees Provident Fund (Amendment) scheme, 2020 has come into force from March 28. Following the notification, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has issued directions to its field offices for promptly processing any applications received from members to help them fight the situation. In its communication, the EPFO has stated that officers and staff must process claims of EPF subscribers promptly so that relief reaches the worker and his family to help them fight with COVID-19. The issue has been linked to one death and three injuries.GM said Friday that there's a software defect with the sensing and diagnostic module that controls airbag deployment. The company said airbags may not deploy in "rare circumstances when a crash is preceded by a specific event impacting vehicle dynamics."It's not great news considering GM is just coming off its ignition recall scandal. The automaker recalled 2.6 million vehicles in 2014 for defective ignition switches that could flip out of the "run" position while the car is moving and turn off the power and disable airbags. On Thursday the <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/fiat-chrysler-do-not-drive-takata-air-bags">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration</a> (NHTSA) issued a consumer alert notifying drivers of the warning which applies to 2005-2010 Dodge Magnums, Dodge Challenger Coupes and Dodge Chargers, as well as Chrysler 300 Sedans. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/r-nissan-expands-us-recall-for-faulty-takata-air-bags-to-52738-vehicles-2014-11">The issue relates to a long-known fault with driver's-side airbags produced by the Japanese firm Takata</a>. Long-term exposure to heat and humidity can affect the inflator, causing it to explode or not inflate properly during a collision. Each is associated with a single fatality, and we had contacted those particular owners about the 2015 recall a combined total of 153 times. Events happen in warm-weather U.S. states. Each one involved a 2010 Dodge Charger."The NHTSA said in a report that drivers should check if their car has an open Takata airbag recall using the agency's Lookup tool, and should schedule a free replacement with their dealer if it is. "Left unrepaired, recalled Takata air bags are increasingly dangerous as the risk of an explosion rises as vehicles age. Every day that passes when you don't get a recalled airbag replaced, puts you and your family at greater risk of injury or death," said NHTSA acting administrator Ann Carlson in the notice. Carlson added that an exploding Takata airbag can send metal fragments towards those in the car.The NHTSA did not immediately respond to Insider's request for further comment, which came outside of standard business hours.
