Earth's impact on the asteroid Most people are usually worried about how an asteroid will impact Earth but few think about the impact Earth would have on an asteroid. The God of Chaos, for instance, won't be immune to the effects of a close encounter with Earth. The planet's gravitational field will definitely have an impact on the asteroid's orbit and could change the way Apophis spins, according to scientists at NASA. Interestingly, the gravitational pull could also result in surface change on Apophis and cause an avalanche. An opportunity for science It's not uncommon for asteroids between 5-10 meters in size to pass by Earth but asteroids the size of Apophis are rare. Ufologist claims the ‘God of Chaos’ asteroid will strike somewhere over Europe

Although there is no chance that asteroid 2012 DA14 will smash into our planet (coincidentally <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/officials-russian-meteorite-not-related-to-todays-asteroid-flyby-2013-2">a meteorite exploded over Russia Friday morning</a>), scientists say it's about the same size as the one that hit Siberia more than 100 years ago on June 30, 1908. 
Tunguska 
The historic <keyword id="52285" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="explosion">explosion</keyword> happened in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Russia-CIA_WFB_Map--Tunguska.png">Tunguska</a>, a remote forest area in the middle of Siberia.
The blast had the power of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event">15 megatons of TNT</a>, roughly a thousand times that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima Japan. The event was so powerful that it was felt and heard a thousand miles away.
Locals believed the blast was supernatural, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiXpp-i442s">caused by a god</a> that was punishing people for their wickedness.
Scientists, on the other hand, <a href="http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/30jun_tunguska/">believed it was a meteor</a>.
Here's Where It Gets Weird
Twenty years passed before the first Russian scientists went to the site to investigate.
If it was a meteor, there would be a crater and meteorite fragments.
However, there was no crater. And there were no fragments.
In fact, at the epicenter of the explosion was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiXpp-i442s">a grove of untouched, fully grown trees</a>. Surrounding that tiny grove was around <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event">800 square miles of leveled trees</a>.
The blast had the hallmarks of an atomic bomb-like explosion. However, no scientific progress had been made in the area of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_nuclear_weapons">nuclear weapons until the 1930s</a>, more than two decades after the event.
Two Theories
Scientists believe that a football field-sized, <a href="http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/history-of-geology/2012/06/30/june-30-1908-the-tunguska-event/">solid ice chunk of a comet</a> entered Earth's atmosphere. When it encountered Earth's intense atmospheric pressure, it immediately exploded miles above the forest. Because it was made of ice, it left no extraterrestrial evidence.
Others believe it was caused by something much smaller: A nuclear-powered alien spaceship that crashed into the Earth.
A hundred years later, neither side seems to have fully convinced the other camp.

THE TUNGUSKA EVENT: This Is What Would Happen If Today's Flyby Asteroid Hit Earth

There is another asteroid which is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/an-asteroid-nearly-half-the-size-of-mount-everest-might-be-on-a-collision-course-for-earth-in-less-than-a-year/articleshow/70698774.cms">half the size of Mount Everest</a> and is expected to pass by the planet in less than a year. But, these are just the ones we know about. In 2013, a space object entered the Earth’s atmosphere and exploded with such a force — equivalent to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/russian-meteor-hit-atmosphere-with-a-force-of-40-hiroshima-bombs/articleshow/21343758.cms">440,000 tons of TNT</a> — that it damaged buildings for 500 square kilometers.  Over 1,400 people were injured in the blast according to Russian authorities. The effects of the asteroid ranged from broken spines to ultra violet burns on their skin. Some people also reported temporary flash blindness from looking directly at the meteor. Thrice the size, four times the damage The Chelyabinsk meteor exploded above the surface of the planet and was still able to inflict damage for miles. Had the meteor actually crashed into the Earth — the resulting destruction would have been on a much larger scale.  So, instead of exploding with the energy of 440,000 tons — Tunguska dispelled around <a href="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1983AREPS..11..461S">15 megatons</a> of TNT, which is 1,000 times the amount of energy of the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima. It should be noted that there is some disagreement over the exact might of the explosion with <a href="https://share.sandia.gov/news/resources/releases/2007/asteroid.html">supercomputer estimates stating</a> that it was only around 3 megatons while a <a href="http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2019Icar..327...83W">new study</a> published in 2019 estimates it to be around 20-30 megatons. The main difference between the two asteroid events was that with Chelyabinsk occurred in a highly populated region, the Tunguska event occurred in a sparsely populated area. Tunguska and Chelyabinsk meteors aren’t the only examples of asteroids that hit Earth — they’re only the largest and the most recent, respectively. In 1930, asteroids are said to have exploded over the Curuca River in Brazil and an iron meteorite fell on the Sikhote Alin Mountains in 1947. The last major asteroid to hit Earth destroyed 500 square kilometers — and it could have been much worse

<ul><li>All it would take is an asteroid as big as a house travelling at 48,000 kilometers an hour colliding into Earth to have an impact equivalent to the Hiroshima nuclear bomb blast.</li><li>Any asteroid larger than one kilometer in diameter would push up so much dust and debris that it could block out the Sun and initiate another Ice Age.</li><li>Space agencies are keeping an eye on <keyword id="3106647" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="near-earth-objects">Near Earth Objects</keyword> passing close to Earth but even their methods aren’t full proof.</li></ul>Movies like Deep Impact, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/RANKED-The-10-movies-that-are-going-to-dominate-the-box-office-this-summer/articleshow/52226358.cms">Armageddon</a>, and even the animated The Good Dinosaur paint a vivid picture of what it would be like if an asteroid actually hit Earth. And, while the movies might be fictional — the reality of hundreds of asteroids whizzing past the planet is not. The reports of asteroids bigger than the Pyramid of Giza and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/an-asteroid-nearly-half-the-size-of-mount-everest-might-be-on-a-collision-course-for-earth-in-less-than-a-year/articleshow/70698774.cms">half the size of Everest</a> passing by awfully close to Earth has gotten some scientists thinking that it’s only a matter of time before an asteroid will collide with the planet’s surface. And it only seems more likely since, despite the Center of Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) and the Near Earth Object Coordination Center (NEOCC), recently illustrated how their methodology isn’t full proof. An <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/">undetected asteroid</a> dubbed 2019 OK missed crashing into Earth by a mere 73,000 kilometers on July 26 and space agencies didn’t know of it until the asteroid had already come and gone.

 Size does matter All it would take is an asteroid that’s as big as a house travelling at 48,000 kilometers per hour to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-is-asteroid-meteorite-and-meteor/articleshow/70654013.cms">release the amount of energy</a> equivalent to the Hiroshima nuclear bomb blast. That means concrete buildings for at least half a mile around the impact site would be flattened and any city would face a grim fate. Increase the size of an asteroid to a 20 story building, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Russian-Meteor-Hit-Atmosphere-With-A-Force-Of-40-Hiroshima-Bombs/articleshow/21343758.cms">resulting impact </a>would be anywhere from 25 megatons to 50 megatons — the same as the largest nuclear bombs that in existence today.

 Any asteroid that spans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-large-asteroids-must-be-to-destroy-a-city-state-country-or-the-planet/articleshow/64806829.cms">more than a kilometer</a> in diameter can’t be comparable to any weapon that humans have created. The one million megatons of energy that would strike Earth will result in 10 times the damage from Hiroshima. And, like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs, the dust and debris thrown back in the atmosphere would block out the sun. In case the asteroid lands in water instead of on land, the result wouldn’t be every different with tidal waves hundreds of feet high submerging whole coastlines. ‘The city killer’ asteroids The asteroid that snuck past Earth, 2019 OK, is between 57 to 130 meters in diameter making it as big as a second tallest statue in the world — the Spring Temple Buddha in China. And, it was travelling at a speed of 86,905 kilometers per hour when it whizzed past Earth. If the asteroid would have collided with Earth, it would have gone off like a nuclear weapon with the force of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/07/26/it-snuck-up-us-city-killer-asteroid-just-missed-earth-scientists-almost-didnt-detect-it-time/">10 megatons</a> of TNT. When an asteroid of about the same size fell to Earth in 1908 — known as the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/30jun_tunguska">Tunguska Impact</a> — it leveled 2,000 square kilometers of forest in Siberia.

 ‘Planet killer’ asteroids The biggest of asteroid to ever hit Earth 65 million years ago was so devastating that it wiped out all the dinosaurs. Not because the asteroid literally landed on them but because it threw up so much moisture and dust into the atmosphere that sunlight was nowhere to be found. No sunlight meant no heat. The resulting drop in temperatures brought on the ice age and the dinosaurs were driven to extinction. What happens when an asteroid actually hits Earth

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Shutterstock</div></div></div>With the Delta Aquarid meteor shower going on right now, and the crowd-favorite Perseid meteor shower hot on its heels, the next few weeks are going to be the prime time to watch some shooting stars light up the night sky.But while dust-sized bits of comets sizzling through our atmosphere put on a pretty awesome show, the consequences of Earth confronting one of these comets head on could actually be pretty disastrous.It's not something that you should be worried about, of course. NASA is on the lookout for any cosmic objects on a crash course with our planet, and they've found that the chances of us colliding with a comet or asteroid anytime soon are virtually zero.It's still pretty interesting to think about though. What would happen if one of these ancient, celestial chunks of ice, dust, and rock smacked into our planet?The 16-mile wide Swift-Tuttle comet - the progenitor of the Perseid meteor shower -hurtles through space at about 36 miles per second, more than 150 times the speed of sound.If a comet of this size struck Earth, the energy of the <a href="http://www.livescience.com/55484-swift-tuttle-collision-with-earth.html">impact would be about 300 times that of the asteroid</a> that scientists believed wiped out the dinosaurs, Donald Yeomans, a senior research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told LiveScience.And the size of a comet or asteroid isn't the only thing to consider with cosmic collisions. While the impact of the comet would be pretty darn destructive, the brunt of the damage would come from the gases it released in Earth's atmosphere."Sulfur dioxide would <a href="http://www.livescience.com/55484-swift-tuttle-collision-with-earth.html">initially cause cooling, and then carbon dioxide would lead to long-term warming</a>," LiveScience writes. "An event like this would likely cause the planet's climate to change drastically, leading to mass extinctions around the globe."A comet colliding with Earth wouldn't necessarily signal mass extinctions and the end of human civilization though.While a comet landing smack dab in the ocean could trigger earthquakes and tsunamis, its atmospheric effects would actually be eased by the ocean. This is what would happen if a comet smacked into Earth

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div>Shutterstock</div>Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku appeared on Comedy Central's "<a href="http://www.colbertnation.com/full-episodes/tue-february-26-2013-dr--michio-kaku">The Colbert Report</a>" last night to discuss the potential of Earth-smashing asteroids. 
Even small asteroids, like the one <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/russia-meteor-aftermath-photos-2013-2">that recently exploded over Russia</a>, can cause disaster. It caused thousands of injuries from the shockwave that blew out windows and shook buildings.
These are called "century asteroids" because they hit the Earth on average about once every 100 years. The <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">space</keyword> rocks generally go unnoticed because they explode over the open ocean, but if they hit a populated area it could spell disaster.
And as cities spread out and grow, these asteroids become more of a threat to humans.
"We were blissfully unaware of the fact that we've had near misses and actual collisions with objects about the size of an apartment building," Kaku pointed out. 
So far the asteroids we've encountered have been "city-busters," says Kaku. But in 2036 we will have a "nation-buster." 
Kaku is referring the <a href="http://www.astrobio.net/pressrelease/3836/alert-to-the-approach-of-asteroid-apophis">Asteroid Apophis</a>, an <keyword id="6549794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asteroid">asteroid</keyword> 10 times bigger than the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/live-building-sized-asteroid-nears-earth-2013-2">one that skimmed Earth earlier this month</a>. According to Kaku, the asteroid will graze Earth's atmosphere in 2029. Depending on how much friction is created during that flyby, there is a window of opportunity that it could hit on its next pass in 2036.
What can we do? Experts have some dramatic plans up their sleeves.
Kaku says some plans include landing on a potentially hazardous space rock and placing a rocket on it to push it "slightly out of the way so that on the second pass it misses Earth."
An Armageddon-like tactic (exploding nukes in an asteroid) wouldn't work because blowing up a big, solid asteroid would just make hundreds of little baby asteroids that can spread out the damage making the impact equally, if not more, dangerous
Astronomers are also watching the skies for <keyword id="51550" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="comets">comets</keyword>. <keyword id="1400230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Comet-ISON">Comet ISON</keyword>, dubbed the "<a href="http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2013/18jan_cometison/">comet of the century</a>" by <keyword id="6360409" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NASA">NASA</keyword>, will make its closest approach to the Sun in late November. If the comet survives, "it could emerge glowing as brightly as the Moon, briefly visible near the sun in broad daylight," says NASA.
Comets are different from asteroids for a number of reasons. The biggest difference is that asteroids are mostly made of rock and metals whereas comets are made of rock and ice. Comets come from the outer solar system and have a tail, made by ice vaporizing as the comet nears the sun. Nearly all asteroids orbit in the region of space between Mars and Jupiter.
The Comet ISON was discovered in September 2012 by Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok. It poses no threat of crashing into Earth but should make for an amazing sight.

A 'Nation-Busting' Asteroid Could Hit Earth In 2036

After all, over half of all known species are insects. So if they all suddenly vanished, you'd notice. No more summers of singing cicadas and flickering fireflies. No bees to pollinate apple, cherry, peach, or almond trees. No one to make honey. A world without insects means a world with empty grocery-store shelves. But that would be just the beginning of our problems. Now, it's impossible to say exactly what would go down, but here's a worst-case scenario of what could happen if all the insects disappeared.There are a few insects most people would be happy to see vanish. Like mosquitoes. They kill hundreds of thousands of people every year by transmitting malaria, West Nile virus, and other diseases. But if they disappeared tomorrow, we might actually miss them. There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes on Earth, all of which are food to birds, bats, frogs, and other animals. No more mosquitoes means these creatures and the animals that eat them could go hungry. The same goes for the dreaded cockroach, a protein-packed meal for birds, rodents, and even humans in some parts of the world. If we lost all 4,400 species of roach, entire ecosystems would struggle to survive. Believe it or not, we'd have even worse troubles ahead since we'd face a serious poop problem without one of the world's greatest recyclers, the dung beetle.You see, history has taught us exactly what happens when these critters can't do their job. Back in 1788, the British introduced cattle to Australia, and these cows pooped a lot. Each one poops enough to fill five tennis courts every year. But while the dung beetles back in Britain would eat and break down cow poo, the native Australian beetles wouldn't touch the stuff because they evolved to munch only on dry, fibrous marsupial dung. So the cow poop piled up. By 1960, the cattle had carpeted 500,000 acres of pasture in dung. That's enough to cover over half of Rhode Island, and while a little bit of poop is great for fertilizer, this ocean of dung would flood plants with nitrogen, making it impossible for anything to grow. So, imagine if all 8,000 species of dung beetle, plus other doo-dining insects, like flies, vanished worldwide. The land would be knee-deep in...you know.Farmland, forest, and desert would all collapse, and floating throughout would be loads of corpses. You see, most animals won't eat dead bodies. That's where flesh-eating beetles, aka dermestids, and other corpse-munching insects come in. Over 500 species of these grisly undertakers live worldwide, devouring dead flesh until nothing but bone remains. Without them, there would be fewer custodians around to clean up the mess. Sure, there would still be hungry vultures and bacteria around to help, but it wouldn't be enough.So, that's where we could end up in an insect-less world. Starving to death while drowning in a sea of poop and corpses.

Here's what would happen if temperatures did increase by 2° C. Sea levels will likely rise by 1.6 feet. Flooding coastlines worldwide. While the amount of fresh water may increase for high latitudes, East Africa, and parts of India and Sahel, subtropical regions may lose nearly one-third of its fresh water.Making matters worse, heat waves could intensify. Tropical regions may experience <a href="https://www.earth-syst-dynam.net/7/327/2016/esd-7-327-2016-corrigendum.pdf">heat waves</a> for up to 3 months which will affect the growth of certain staple crops. These areas will likely produce less wheat and corn but slightly more soy and rice.Which could affect overall diets worldwide. Likewise, North Asia may see a boost in soy crops. Growing up to a quarter more soy each year. For sea life, the situation is more dire. Warmer oceans will do <a href="https://www.earth-syst-dynam.net/7/327/2016/esd-7-327-2016.pdf">irreversible damage</a> to 99% of coral reefs. As the reefs die off, it will disrupt ecosystems for up to 9 million different species.This scenario was forecasted by the <a href="https://www.egu.eu/news/230/15c-vs-2c-global-warming-new-study-shows-why-half-a-degree-matters/">European Geosciences Union</a> in 2016. In 2017, another team of scientists estimated there's a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-earth-two-degrees-warming-2100-new-studies-2017-7">95% chance</a> Earth will warm more than 2 ºC by 2100. Bleak forecasts may not be enough to stop humans from warming Earth. But at least they're a guide on how to prepare for a frightening future.

Normally, it would take hundreds to thousands of years for it all to melt away. But what if something happened that caused a massive global melt overnight?As we slept, sea levels would rise by a whopping 66 meters. Coastal cities like New York, Shanghai, and London would drown in the apocalyptic mass flood, forcing up to 40% of the world's population out of their homes. While all this chaos ensues aboveground, something equally sinister is happening below. All that rising saltwater will infiltrate groundwater reserves farther inland, forcing its way into nearby freshwater aquifers. You know, the ones that supply our drinking water, irrigation systems, and power-plant cooling systems? All those aquifers would be destroyed. Not good.On top of that, the ice on Greenland and Antarctica is made of freshwater, so when it melts, that's about 69% of the world's freshwater supply that's going straight into the oceans. This will wreak havoc on our ocean currents and weather patterns. Take the Gulf Stream, for example. It's a strong ocean current that brings warm air to northern Europe and relies on dense, salty water from the Arctic in order to function. But a flood of freshwater would dilute the current and could weaken or even stop it altogether. Without that warm air, temperatures in northern Europe would plummet, and that could spawn a mini ice age, according to some experts.That's not even the worst of it. Take a look at what will happen when that last 1% of freshwater ice that's not part of Greenland or Antarctica thaws. Some of that 1% is sitting in glaciers farther inland. The Himalayan glaciers specifically pose one of the largest threats because of what's trapped inside: toxic chemicals like dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, or DDT. Scientists discovered that glaciers like this can store these chemicals for decades. But as they thaw, those glaciers release the chemicals into rivers, lakes, and groundwater reserves, poisoning each one as they go.The rest of that 1% is hanging out underground, mostly in the Arctic tundra, as something called permafrost. Permafrost is organic matter that's been frozen in the ground for two-plus years. Now, one of the most immediate problems with thawing permafrost would be mercury poisoning. That's right: There are an estimated 15 million gallons of mercury stored up in the Arctic permafrost. That's almost equal to the amount of mercury everywhere else on Earth. On top of that, the organic matter in permafrost is a tasty meal for microorganisms. After they digest it all, they fart out two of the most potent greenhouse gases out there, carbon dioxide and methane. Scientists estimate this could double the current levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and potentially cause global temperatures to rise by 3.5 degrees Celsius compared to today.That might not sound like much, but say goodbye to that mini European ice age, and even rivers and lakes around the world. They'd evaporate from the higher temperatures and cause mass droughts and desert-like climates. And all that extra water vapor in the atmosphere would fuel more frequent and stronger storms, floods, and hurricanes. So all of that newly established coastline on the eastern US would be one of the last places you'd want to live. Instead, there would be mass migrations to Canada, Alaska, the Arctic, and even what's left of the Antarctic.And you're right, this is probably never going to happen. After all, there's enough ice right now to cover the entire continent of North America in a sheet a mile thick. So the next time you hear about record-breaking heat or ultra-powerful hurricanes, at least you know that it could be worse.
