New Delhi, Nov 28 () Hospitality major InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) on Thursday announced the appointment of Sudeep Jain as Managing Director, South West Asia with effect from January 1, 2020.
<p> Sudeep is currently serving as VP Development, South West Asia (SWA) and succeeds Vivek Bhalla, who has been promoted to the role of Vice President Operations for South East Asia and Korea, IHG said in a statement.
</p><p> In his new role, Sudeep will take on a broader leadership agenda to drive IHG's business in the region, covering both development and operations responsibilities across the existing portfolio of 39 hotels representing five brands -- InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, it added.
</p><p> Sudeep will continue to be based in Gurugram, and will report to Pascal Gauvin, Managing Director, India, Middle East and Africa, IHG, the statement said.
</p><p> Commenting on the development, Gauvin said: "Since joining IHG, he (Sudeep) has led our growth agenda in the market, successfully positioning IHG as one of the leading hospitality companies in SWA, especially in India."
</p><p> Sudeep brings close to two decades of experience in the hospitality sector from roles based in the US and India, working across brand management, asset management, strategy, planning and real estate development, the statement said.

 Coca-Cola has announced a senior management reshuffle in Indian operations with Vice President Human Resources, Sameer Wadhawan given the responsibility to lead the newly created function of Franchise Capability and Business Transformation, as per a news agency.<br />
<br />
Manu Narang Wadhwa, who has joined Coca-Cola from American Express where she served for nine years, will succeed Wadhawan, the company said in a statement.<br />
<br />
In his new role, Wadhawan will work closely with Coca-Cola's 15 franchise bottling partners in India and South West Asia region to build people capability, and help transform business to become future-ready, it added.<br />
<br />
Wadhawan will take over the new responsibility starting January, 2017 and continue to report to Coca-Cola India and South West Asia President Venkatesh Kini.<br />
<br />
Commenting on the development, Kini said: "Over the last six years, Sameer has shaped the talent development and capability building agenda within the company. Sameer takes on this critical role of developing capabilities for the franchise bottling operations across the region."<br />
<br />
The company said Wadhwa has over two decades of experience in driving transformational people strategies for growth, focusing on talent management, leadership development and transformation agendas.<br />

CHART: The West Is Over -&#160;Asia Will Dominate The Smartphone Industry In The Next 5 Years

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6355311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> and the <keyword id="11897975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="uk" source="Orion">UK</keyword> discussed plans to cut <keyword id="11902482" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword>'s reliance on <keyword id="13337215" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russian-oil" source="Orion">Russian oil</keyword> on Thursday.</li><li>Russia is increasingly looking to Asia as an export market, as Western buyers shun the country.</li></ul><p>Japan and the UK are discussing plans to cut Asia's reliance on Russian oil, as Western governments and their allies try to ramp up the economic pressure on Moscow.</p><p>Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met his UK counterpart Boris Johnson in London on Thursday to finalize the details of a security pact.</p><p>As part of the talks, the two countries are expected to agree to joint action to help key Asian economies to develop green <keyword id="11917806" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="energy" source="Orion">energy</keyword> so they can transition away from Russian oil and gas, the UK government <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-japan-set-to-rapidly-accelerate-defence-and-security-ties-with-landmark-agreement">said</a>.</p><p>The meeting comes a day after the European Union <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/eu-russian-oil-ban-crude-refined-ukraine-sanctions-economy-putin-2022-5">proposed a total ban</a> on Russian oil imports by the end of the year. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the embargo was a necessary step to punish Russia economically for its invasion of Ukraine.</p><p>Von der Leyen said the bloc would phase out crude oil imports in six months and refined products by the end of the year, provided the EU's 27 countries agree on a deal.</p><p>Analysts said the move would pile the pressure on Russia to find alternative buyers of its oil, with Asia likely the prime focus. Britain is currently phasing out Russian oil purchases, and the US has already banned imports.</p><p>Asia, and in particular India, has taken advantage of the discounted price of Russian oil during the Ukraine conflict to increase its purchases. China's independent refineries have recently been buying Russian oil on the cheap, the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/4f277a24-d681-421a-9c94-29d6fd448b20">Financial Times</a> reported Tuesday.</p><p>The likely agreement between Japan and the UK is a sign that the two countries are keen to limit Russia's ability to profit from energy sales elsewhere in the world.</p><p>The UK government did not provide more detail about the plan, however, only saying that it would focus on developing green energy sources in Asia.</p><p>Rystad Energy analyst Bjornar Tonhaugen said Russia would find it hard to unplug from Europe and switch supplies to Asia.</p><p>"Russia will try to redirect as much volume as possible from the West to Asia, but infrastructure constraints will limit its abilities," he said.</p><p>"Some volumes may be redirected by sea from the West to the East, but the feasibility of maritime supplies will be strongly dependent on the availability of oil tankers willing to deal with Russian crude, especially given the risk of shipping and insurance sanctions."</p><p>The EU's plan to ban Russian oil imports may run into problems, however. Japan and the UK thrash out plans to cut Asia's reliance on Russian oil, as sanction-hit Moscow hunts for new buyers

<keyword id="2262976" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="HRD-Minister-Smriti-Irani">HRD Minister Smriti Irani</keyword> has cleared a proposal to allow foreign students to take entrance examinations to enrol in IITs.<br />

Aspirants will take Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) at the bachelor's level and the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) at the master's and PhD levels.<br />

Irani, who is also chairperson of the IIT Council, has asked IITs to bring a proposal before the panel for approval.<br />
 <br />
The ministry wants to add 10,000 seats in 18 IITs to attract students from South Asia, Africa and West Asia.<br />
 <br />
To get admission, foreign students will have to pay full fees of Rs 4-5 lakh per year. Indian students pay Rs 90,000 per year as fee.<br />

The onus to prepare JEE and GATE exams in countries abroad is on IIT-Bombay director Professor Devang V Khakhar.<br />
 <br />
Until now, foreign students could study in IITs through cultural exchange fellowship.<br />
 <br />
Also, this doesn’t mean that Indians will not get the preference as the number of seats for Indian students will not be changed.<br />

IITs open doors for foreign students, allows them to take entrance exams

<ul class="summary-list"><li>If <keyword id="12616996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> spreads in <keyword id="11902482" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="asia" source="Orion">Asia</keyword> it could lead to factory shutdowns.</li><li>This could wreak havoc on already fragile global supply chains, one economist said.</li></ul><p>Just as the global <keyword id="11894138" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="supply-chain" source="Orion">supply chain</keyword> breakdown had begun to heal, the arrival of Omicron is casting a dark shadow over its recovery. </p><p>In a note to clients on Monday, Frederic Neumann, co-head of Asian Economics Research at HSBC, warned that the highly transmissible Omicron variant could lead to the "mother of all supply chain stumbles" if it spreads across Asia and raises the risk of factory shutdowns. The new variant is already <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-5981466">wreaking havoc in the US and Europe</a>.</p><p>He wrote: "Asian production networks, hitherto impressively resilient, may be thrown into a funk as Omicron grips the region...and all at a time when, faintly, faintly, supply chain issues appear to be easing in the West. The risk, then, is that over the coming months we'll experience the 'mother of all supply chain' stumbles: an Omicron-driven stall in factory Asia."</p><p>The recent spate of <keyword id="11893994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19" source="Orion">COVID-19</keyword> flare-ups in Asia is already putting a strain on supply chains. Insider's Huileng Tan recently reported that major chipmakers such as Samsung and Micron had warned that a strict <a href="https://www.insider.com/china-xian-intense-lockdown-people-running-out-of-food-covid-2021-12">lockdown</a> in the city of Xi'an in central China could affect operations at their <keyword id="6362048" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="manufacturing" source="Orion">manufacturing</keyword> facilities there. Any delays in chip supply would intensify a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/global-chip-shortage-could-last-another-2-years-experts-say-2021-5">global chip shortage</a> and impact electronics manufacturing, Tan wrote. </p><p>The current supply chain-driven delays that the West is experiencing are largely related to transportation and labor issues rather than factory shutdowns and shortages that were common early on in the pandemic, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tj-maxx-ross-stores-deals-2022-supply-chain-crisis-2021-11">experts say</a>. </p><p>If these shutdowns were to return, it could wreak havoc on the already fragile supply chain network. And the rapid rate of the transmission could mean Omicron is more disruptive than other variants, Neumann said.</p><p>"With slower moving variants, many governments were able to shield essential manufacturing operations, limiting the impact on the output of essential goods and components.</p><p>"But that will be harder to do with Omicron, which races through populations at unrivaled speed - and even if it presents a somewhat less acute health risk compared to earlier variants, it is still potent enough to deprive Asia's factory of a critical number of workers during their convalescence," he said. </p><p>Still, there is some light at the end of the tunnel, he said. Omicron may burn itself out faster than other variants so while the immediate impact will likely be severe, it may at least be short-lived. </p>

Prepare for the 'mother of all supply chain stumbles' if Omicron sweeps across Asia and raises the risk of factory shutdowns, analyst warns

<p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The constant changes in opiate smuggling routes from Afghanistan and the fact that Afghan heroin may be reaching new markets point to a new obstacle for law enforcement: the dark net, <a href="https://www.unodc.org/documents/wdr2015/World_Drug_Report_2015.pdf">according to the World Drug Report</a>.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This place on the internet, which allows buyers to access drugs easily and anonymously is proving to be a new driving force in drug trafficking.</span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Alongside changes in different drug trafficking routes, such as the one used to to smuggle opiates from Afghanistan through Pakistan into South Asia and through Iran into Europe, the World Drug report also found evidence that criminal groups are diversifying the kinds of drugs they are focusing on. </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The interest in cannabis resin and methamphetamine has been growing and routes normally used for just one type of drug now host a few. </span></p><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Changes in the kind of drugs being smuggled through specific countries are also changing. African countries, which are traditionally used as transit hubs for heroin and cocaine are now also used for other drugs.</span></p><h2 class="p2"><span class="s1"><strong>Cocaine</strong></span></h2><p class="p1"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Cocaine, which is almost exclusively cultivated in South America, is mostly smuggled through Africa or the Caribbean before reaching Europe. Eastern Europe is also starting to become a transit area, and although quantities remain small it could show a movement in the cocaine markets. Costa Rica also reported that it is now both a transit and temporary storage country.</span></p><p class="p2"><span class="s1">Cocaine use continues to be on the decline in Western and Central Europe and North America and the cocoa bush cultivation is at its lowest since the mid 80's, according to the report.</span></p><h2 class="p2"><span class="s1"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Heroin</span></h2><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Increased seizures of heroin, particularly in East Africa, point to Africa's role for the smuggling of Afghan heroin into Europe has become more and more important. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Recent seizures also suggest that large shipments of Afghan heroin are smuggled across the Indian Ocean and into East and Southern Africa. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">In Canada, the quasi totality of heroin comes from Afghanistan. Although the United States's heroin supplies mostly come from Central and South America, things might start changing as fluctuations in the Australian market between heroin originating from Myanmar and Afghanistan point to the fact that criminal networks are increasingly global. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The report notes that there are also indications of increased trafficking in South and South East Asia and West and East Africa and the "Balkan route" through Iran and Turkey to Europe, the "northern route" through Central Asia to Russia and the "southern route" through Iran or Pakistan to Asia are all established trafficking routes of Afghan opiates.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><strong style="font-size: 1.5em; color: #000000;">Methamphetamine</strong></span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">East and South East Asia and Oceania are emerging as global market for ecstasy while the market declines in America and significant seizures over the past five years show that new trafficking routes are emerging. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The market for methamphetamine is expanding in East and South East Asia and the use of crystal meth is increasing in North America and Europe. <ul class="summary-list"><li>US crude oil exports to Europe from January to May surpassed exports to Asia. </li><li>It's the first time Europe has overtaken Asia since 2016, when the US lifted its ban on oil exports. </li></ul><p>Europe passed Asia as the largest consumer of US crude oil for the first time in six years as <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>'s war on <keyword id="11985141" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ukraine" source="Orion">Ukraine</keyword> reorders global energy <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword>. </p><p>From January to May, the US exported 213.1 million barrels to Europe and 191.1 million barrels to Asia, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-15/europe-becomes-top-market-for-us-crude-as-war-upends-trade">Census Bureau data compiled by Bloomberg</a>. </p><p>That's the first time Europe has topped Asia since 2016, when the US lifted its ban on crude oil exports. Asia's imports of US oil during the January-May period have been relatively flat in recent years while Europe's have been well below 200 million barrels.</p><p>The shift in consumption exemplifies how Russia's war on Ukraine has spurred upheaval throughout global energy markets.</p><p>In particular, Europe is swiftly attempting to move away from dependence on Russian energy and exploring other sources. The US was already sending large swathes of liquefied natural <keyword id="11955852" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="gas" source="Orion">gas</keyword> to Europe, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/us-gas-exports-to-europe-overtake-asia-russian-supply-energy-2022-6">triple the amount exported in 2021</a>, with Europe also overtaking Asia as the top destination of US LNG this year. </p><p>Yet Russia is still making quick cash for its crude, as China, India and <keyword id="11894587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="saudi-arabia" source="Orion">Saudi Arabia</keyword> scoop up discounted supplies shunned by the West. </p><p>In fact, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-saudi-arabia-oil-fuel-energy-sanctions-inflation-ukraine-2022-7">Saudi Arabia has more than doubled imports of Russian oil</a> to feed domestic power markets to make room for its own crude exports. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>US crude flows have seen an uptick in deliveries to Asia, Bloomberg data shows. </li><li>Buyers in China, India and South Korea have scooped up more than 20 million barrels this month, per the report. </li></ul><p>The US is sending an increasing volume of crude to Asia, as the world's top fuel-consuming region ramps up long-haul orders of supplies, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-22/oil-from-faraway-makes-inroads-in-asia-in-hurdle-for-middle-east?srnd=markets-vp">according to a Bloomberg report</a>. </p><p>For November deliveries, data shows an uptick of over 20 million barrels coming out of the US to China, India, and South Korea.</p><p>President Joe Biden's releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has led to crude flowing out of the country at a record clip, Bloomberg reports. </p><p>US crude exports hit 5 million barrels per day, Energy Department data showed last week, as it trades at a steep discount to Brent. On Monday, West Texas Intermediate dipped 0.3% to $90.53 per barrel, and Brent eased 0.3% to $96.47.</p><p>To be sure, Russian crude, which has seen a steep increase in flows to Asia since the war in Ukraine began, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russian-oil-production-high-rerouting-exports-asia-eu-ban-sanctions-2022-8">continues to flow to Asia as well</a> and the nation's production has beat expectations, according to the IEA. </p><p>Meanwhile, the increase in American crude heading to Asia has dragged down spot premiums for Persian Gulf barrels. </p><p>Bloomberg data shows that the premium of Oman crude futures to Dubai swaps, which is a barometer of the strength of Middle Eastern barrels in Asia, has slipped by more than 50% over the last month. </p>

US oil exports to China and India jump as American crude heads overseas at a record pace

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Stringer China/Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Manufacturing is a dangerous place to have a job at the moment.</p><p>Employees in Asia are being squeezed from two sides.</p><p>Firstly, China is trying to move itself away from being the world's factory towards a services and consumption-led economy.</p><p>And secondly, global demand and trade is dropping like a stone, leading to fewer export orders.</p><p>Here's HSBC:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Manufacturing the world over continues to slide. Asia is feeling the brunt. Trade, after a dismal 2015, continues to fizzle, with new export orders still contracting. The region's domestic travails, above all in China, are well known, but the West is also losing steam. Manufacturing jobs in Asia have hit their lowest point since 2009

New Delhi, <keyword id="19895159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="russia" source="keywords">Russia</keyword> is a power with an enormous tradition of statecraft and it is turning more towards Asia or non-West parts of the world, External Affairs Minister <keyword id="19922782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="s-jaishankar" source="keywords">S Jaishankar</keyword> said on Friday, delving into current geopolitical developments and their fall-outs. In an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue, <keyword id="19920247" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jaishankar" source="keywords">Jaishankar</keyword>, replying to a question on Moscow's growing proximity with Beijing, said it makes sense to give Russia multiple options and that railroading it into a single option and criticising it for that would be like a self-fulfilling prophecy. <br /><br />"I think it makes sense to give Russia multiple options. If we railroad Russia into a single option and say that's really bad because that's the outcome, then you are making it a self-fulfilling prophecy," he said. <br /><br />"Today it is important for other countries, especially in Asia to engage Russia," Jaishankar said. <br /><br />"Russia is a power with an enormous tradition of statecraft. Such powers would never put themselves into a single relationship of an overwhelming nature. It would go against their grain," he said. <br /><br />The external affairs minister was asked to comment on intensification of ties between Russia and China and whether <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> was uncomfortable with it. <br /><br />"What's happened today with Russia essentially is that a lot of doors have been shut to Russia and the West. We know the reasons why. Russia is turning more to Asia or to parts of the world which are not West," he said. <br /><br />The external affairs minister suggested that policies of the West are bringing Russia and China closer. <br /><br />"It's kind of funny -- on the one hand you have people who set policies (and) bring the two together and then you say beware of them coming together," he said. <br /><br />The question was asked by <keyword id="20700294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="michael-fullilove" source="keywords">Michael Fullilove</keyword>, Executive Director of Lowy Institute, Australia. <br /><br />Jaishankar's comments came days after he said India has had a "stable" and "very friendly" relationship with Russia, and that Moscow never hurt New Delhi's interests. <br /><br />The ties between India and Russia remained strong notwithstanding Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. <br /><br />India's import of Russian crude oil has gone up significantly despite increasing disquiet over it in many Western countries. <br /><br />India has not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and it has been maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. <br /><br />In his remarks, Jaishankar also highlighted India's G20 presidency and how it ensured induction of the African Union as a permanent member of the grouping. <br /><br />He noted that if the G20 could be expanded, the permanent membership of the UN Security Council can also be increased. <br /><br />"When the sort of smoke clears and people look back on this G20, it will surely be recognised for the fact that the African Union's membership was agreed upon," he said. <br /><br />The external affairs minister also highlighted India's foreign policy priorities including combating terrorism and attempting to ensure inclusive global welfare. <br /><br />It could be millets, it could be yoga, it could be solar energy, it could be combating terrorism, it could be black money. You today see an India, which is really pushing and trying to get itself and its ideas on the global stage, he said.
